A Bangladesh General has been appointed as the Force Commander for the UN Peace Mission in Cyprus, the highest position currently being held by an officer of Bangladesh Armed Forces, reports BSS.
Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir left Dhaka today for New York to report at the UN Headquarters, where he is scheduled to have several briefings on his responsibility in Cyprus, said an ISPR press release.
General Humayun Kabir is scheduled to join his duty on October 9. The UN Peace Mission has been playing a crucial role in Cyprus since 1964.
Before his new assignment, General Humayun also served as Military Observer in UN Peace Missions in Bosnia and Congo as well.
At home, he served as Commandant of Bangladesh Military Academy, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 17th Infantry Division, Sylhet, and Director, Military Operations Directorate of Army Headquarters.
A handful of Bangladesh generals also performed as Force Commanders in some other UN Peace Missions in different troubled-torn parts across the world, the press release added.
