Bangladesh-US relations have been strained since Washington sanctioned RAB and several of its current and former officials.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Saturday accused the US of acting high and mighty while sheltering Rashed Chowdhury, a prime suspect in the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman.

The minister was speaking to reporters at an event organized to mark International Migrants Day on Saturday.

“A person [Rashed] who committed crimes against humanity and killed many people is now being sheltered by the US,” the minister said.

Regarding US sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and several of its current and former officials over alleged human rights abuses, Momen said: “We [Momen and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken] have talked about the issue. Time is an issue right now, we will sit and discuss the matter later.”

He also mentioned that crime rates in Bangladesh had dropped significantly due to RAB.

“You [the US] want to stop terrorism, drug abuse and human trafficking. RAB does just that. Bangladeshis have not accepted the sanctions on RAB,” he added.

The foreign minister said the people of Bangladesh had faith in RAB because “they cannot be bought” and the US was wrong to impose sanctions on such an agency.

He said Blinken had promised to discuss the issue and realized that Bangladesh was very disappointed with the sanctions.

Furthermore, Momen said Bangladesh currently did not have any plans to take retaliatory action against the US. “We do not have the mentality of looking for faults with everyone.”

The US government recently slapped sanctions on RAB and seven of its former and current high officials over allegations of human rights abuses.

Sanctions were also imposed on dozens of people and entities tied to China, Myanmar and North Korea, while the Chinese artificial intelligence company SenseTime Group was added to an investment blacklist under Section 7031(c) of the FY2021 Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act.

The sanctioned officials include former RAB director general (DG) and current Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed and current RAB DG Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, according to a press release issued by the US Department of Treasury on December 10.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen summoned United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller on December 11 to convey Dhaka’s disappointment over the sanctions imposed by Washington.

Bold Part: Who stops an economically developed BD from putting sanctions on the USA? the sanctions should include the following:

1) No underwear exports to the USA from BD. Let them freeze in winter
2) No accepting of military gifts such as frigates or others from the US excess baggage. After all, Bd is not a beggar country
3) No military purchases from the USA. Our brats in the PDF believe a desperate USA is insisting on selling American military goodies to BD
4) No US cargo or military ship be allowed to pass through the seawater in the south of BD
5) BD will ask the UN to expel the USA from that organization. First from the Security Council and then from the General Council

I am still thinking what other steps BD should take against the USA. The USA has insulted the great democratic country called Bangladesh. However, I believe that this husband-wife idiotic Momen has lost his mind because he can no more transfer his evil money to any westerns shores anymore and live a luxurious life.

The Hell with BAL and BAL cronies!! BAL বাস্টার্ডদের চুরির পয়সাতে সুখে দিন কাটানোর সময় পার হয়ে গেছে।

Momen badly needs to stay away from the press - he has no filter. The other day he said we are "donating" military vehicles to the Maldives. Why would you belittle another country like that?

He should have said, "gifting" or "sending", instead of saying "donating". Donation is derogatory. Momen knows no diplomatic niceties, and he is unable to distinguish between two English words.

He is worse than Asaduzzaman Khan the Home Minister.

While in the US, he asked a Democratic Congresswoman to legalize illegal Bangladeshis.

A country's foreign minister must be the most competent and most discreet minister in the government. You are the face of your country to the world. What you say and do is always in scope.

US condition for lifting sanction on RAB is to be anti-China and be an obedient dog to US.

Welcome J-10C :enjoy:
The US condition for lifting the US sanctions is to open files for more than 1000 killed and more than 600 disappearances. I am not necessarily anti-China, but unlike China, BD is known as a democratic country.

However, this BAL party is not following the rules of electing people's representatives. It forces people not to participate in voting. Most votes are cast by the RAB/ Police and other subdued govt agencies in the early morning before the vote centers are opened.

Now, RAB must open files and declare what happened to the disappeared people and how more than 1000 persons were killed by this organization. The issue is not if BAF buys American or Chinese planes. The issue is pure democracy and whether BD loses its biggest export market in America as well as the EU.

BD must revert to democracy without RAB interference.

Very good showing some backbone .

US don't care u are democratic or not. Even BD rule by dictatorship but as long as BD is pro US. They will never find trouble for you.

Addressing those issue of RAB is just smokescreen for US imperialism. US wants to continue it's global domination. Only low IQ naive think US is really for democracy, true human right, freedom. and justice.

US wants BD to stand at their side and not being neutral between US and China

He doesn't say anything by himself. He is foreign minister so actually he is delivering the message of government!

So surely he has some strong backup/big brother that encouraging him.

Wasn't it the same guy who called India as spouse of Bangladesh? How many Bangladeshi agree with him?

So I'm sure he is delivering messages of another power who is behind him.

I don't think we have to be worried if it's a part of big game, as our worry isn't going to change things!

Personally I will keep supporting govt if all are part of any big game !

Bangladesh isn't going to be anti China. And IMHO that's why foreign minister is firing gun at usa!
Very good showing some backbone .
Soon the fire will be directly against India. Will you give thumbs up then?

If anything - we should be gifting them patrol vessels to protect smuggling and illegal poaching in EEZ fishing areas. But donations are fine, this is how you gain the support of foreign countries. Maldives is still one vote in the UN.

Agreed but our govt officials should not utter the word "donation" in this context as it is demeaning.
Imagine being a Maldivian and hearing Momen speak.

Yeah this again proves, this Momen guy is "One can Short of A Six Pack" and is "not firing on all cylinders", just like that Bipin Rawat guy, though not as devious. We all remember how he described Bangladesh and India as husband and wife....SMH.

He could've used any other word rather than donation. What was wrong with "gift"?

Momen has no filter, which is disastrous for being an FM and a diplomat. Not playing with a full deck....
