The United Nations have elected Bangladesh as one of the vice presidents for its upcoming General Assembly.
It’s among the 15 other countries nominated for the 71st session of the assembly, said a statement by the UN mission of Bangladesh.
Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN Peter Thomson has been elected as the president, who will replace Denmarl’s Mogens Lykketoft, said a UN statement.
According to the rules, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council are the vice presidents of the assembly. The rest are elected from different regions.
Bangladesh will represent the Asia-Pacific region, said UN Bangladesh mission’s First Secretary Bijon Lal Deb.
“Bangladesh has been elected unanimously,” he said.
