Dhaka, Feb 28 (UNB) - Bangladesh demands equitable solution to maritime boundary issue with Myanmar based on the final judgment of the International Tribunal for Law of the Sea that is due in mid-March, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said on Tuesday.
The Foreign Minister made the remark while addressing a seminar titled Maritime Boundary Issues between Bangladesh and Myanmar held at the auditorium of Bangladesh Institute of International Strategic Studies (BIISS) in the city.
University teachers, former ambassadors, retired secretaries, military and civil officials, newspaper editors took part in the seminar held with BIISS director general Maj Gen Muhammad Imrul Quayes in the chair.
Additional secretary to Foreign Ministry Rear Admiral (retd) M Khurshed Alam presented the keynote paper at the function.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Dipu Moni said apart from continuing the negotiations with the neighbouring country, Bangladesh proceeded with legal arguments in the international court as an alternative way to ensure the countrys rights to the sea resources.
Bangladesh presented all necessary documents, information and arguments before the country. Now we hope that well get justice, she said.
Describing the maritime boundary with Myanmar as one of the national issues, Dipu Moni said the ruling Awami League government has taken the necessary legal steps in this regard to ensure peoples desire and rights identifying the maritime boundary.
She mentioned that Bangladesh dealt the legal steps efficiently at the international court taking counsels of the internationally renowned layers. Hydrographers and oceanographers are also hopeful of having the verdict in our favour.
The Foreign Minister said the government would take steps to make the documents public so that people could have access to the information.
Some of the speakers emphasised producing skilled manpower by introducing oceanography and hydrography in the countrys public and private universities.
Although oceanography is an important subject in the modern world and also very pertinent for Bangladesh, no private university in the country teach their students about it, said Rear Admiral (retd) M Khurshed Alam.
