Defence to get extensive facelift
Star Online Report
The government today (Sunday) unveiled an extensive plan to strengthen the country’s defence system by equipping the armed forces with more sophisticated weapons including tank-destroying missiles, frigates, choppers and patrol aircraft.
Planning Minister AK Khandker told the parliament that the government would purchase the weapons and necessary equipment for the armed forces in the current and next financial year.

The planning minister did not specify the approximate cost of the purchases. He said the government took measures to make the armed forces well equipped, well trained and well organised, considering the financial solvency of the country.

In reply to a query of ruling alliance lawmaker Zafar Iqbal Siddiqui, the minister in a scripted answer said the process for signing an agreement was completed to procure anti-ship missile at a cost of Tk 120 crore for Navy’s Frigate this year.

“It’s now awaiting the final approval of the government. Besides, work on setting up anti-aircraft missile at the Frigate is on,” the minister said.

Khandker said the process was underway to replace another three frigates of the Navy, which are aged over 50 years, by new ones.

“Communications with different countries are going on to this effect,” the minister said, describing the measures, which are among the long term plans to make the Navy as a three-dimensional force to meet the challenge of 21st century.

“International tender has already been floated to purchase choppers and maritime patrol air crafts to strengthen the maritime patrol and as a part of making the Navy as three-dimensional force,” said Khandker, also the former chief of the air force.

On the plans to make the army well equipped, the planning minister said the government planned to purchase helicopters, tanks, armoured personnel carriers, anti-tank and aircraft missiles, sniper rifles, explosive, night vision, different types of modern radio equipments, vehicles, different types of arms and others related equipments in the current fiscal year of 2008-09.

“Initiatives are being taken to provide computerised modern and modern training to the army by setting up simulators at 27 training establishments and our standard of training of our army has been lauded all over the world,” the planning minister said.

Yeah, they tend to like Russians more than Chinese.Let's see who they buys from now.Let's hope there is no corruption this time around.

All most all of these purchase and plan were done before AL govt elected. Besides, these are all defensive weapons and India care less about these. One most important item missing from plan AL announced is submarine, we have to see what AL govt does on that.

For army one item desperately needed and missing is long range MBRL system.

Our sea border is under threat and we are subject to more bully from west of our border. More importantly things to observe are - what AL govt would do NEW for strengthening defense and implement the stated plan.

We are not fielding an offensive army but a defensive one.We need to improve our air defence, which is being done.

BTW how can you term Tanks defensive item?

Subs are needed and hope the frigates are of good quality.

we need defensive weapons dude.we aren't and shouldn't be interested in anything else.
maritime and land borders need more attention than anything else right now.

Army=> body armour and night vision goggles, and better personnel equipment.
Air defence artillery,better modern ones.

Navy=>Maritime surveillance aircraft, frigates and Advanced Off shore patrol vessels for the Coast Guard.

Air Force=>Air defence missile systems.and I am kind of tired of chinese and Russian aircraft.need to get something new.

BDR=>Better equipment, night vision goggles, firearms, body armour plus a fence is needed on our side too.

sorry for the double post.

Without offensive teeth, with overwhelming enemy, defense alone does not stand much chance.

In mordern warfare and considering our terrain and cost, tank would not be that much useful neither for defense nor for offense. Rather Self Propelled Howitzer, MBRL and surface to surface missile would be more appropiate and much needed.

.
SAMs poses greater threat to intruders,we need it.There is no plan for fighters yet,But I am sure if they go for it will be from Russia or USA.China has low possibility.
Need to modernise our navy, its priority. Also improve our RADAR system.

155mm Self propelled howeitzers are already ordered.
We have very limited offensive capabilities. It will cost us some large bucks,as we need to go for Advanced fighters.without fighters supporting above, these artillaries will be sitting ducks.

"Offence is the best Defence"

"Best defence is also a good Offence"--works either way.

bro... to me offense is the best way to defend... Our soldiers are not chickens like the Indians... so why spoiling their bravery by only acquiring defensive stuffs??

If 155 SPH ordered that's good news but I have not seen anything regarding that.

We need many things and that requires lot more money than we can afford. Therefore no choice but prioritize.

Considering Indian air capability and our limited airspace, first we need to make sure our aircrafts and installation are safe from Indian air and missile threat. Without at least limited protection against Indian capability our airforce, no matter how good aircraft we have will not be effective even in defending our sky.

So we need to build multi layer(low, mid and high) air defense systems. The SAM we have provide very very limited defense on low layer. And new purchase planned would provide enhanced low level and perhaps very very limited mid level coverage. And we have long way to go.

In the mean time our best bet would be try getting J-10 type of platform in friendly financial term from China.

.
The Northern part of our country is suitable for Tank warfare.I forgot to mention this before.

Since you are comparing everything with India, let me tell you one thing,India will establish Air superiority within first few hours and our offensive capabilities are gone.So then we have to rely on Defensive items. This is an explanation to a hypothetical scenario.
