ARES Shipyard, which has made a name for itself with the success it has achieved in the field of export, signed a memorandum of understanding with ASFAT during the IDEF 2021 defence exhibition in Turkey for the patrol ship requirement of the Bangladesh Coast Guard Command. It was stated that this cooperation agreement, which forms the basis of a government-to-government (G2G) export contract, will be implemented as soon as possible.

The platforms that the company focused on promoting at the fair were ARES 150 HERCULES Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) and ARES 95 FAMB (Fast Attack Missile Boat / Assault Boat).

ARES 150 HERCULES, 48 m long, can reach speeds of 40 knots per hour. Built using full vacuum infusion technology and composite material, the ship can operate up to 6 sea states. Having a cruising range of 1,600 nautical miles, ARES 150 HERCULES does not need a potable water supply during the mission, as it has a reverse osmosis system. To be used against conventional and asymmetric threats on the ship equipped with various electro-optical sensors; There is 1 GUARDIAN and 2 STAMP remote-controlled weapon systems. 30 mm automatic cannon on the GUARD; On the STAMP, there is a 12.7 mm machine gun. In addition, 2 ARES 24 HARPOON Emergency Response Boats can be deployed on the stern of the ship for the use of special operations teams.

Özgün Utku Alanç, General Manager of ARES Shipyard, underlines that ARES 150 HERCULES, which was selected as the World’s Best Offshore Patrol Ship in 2018 by a foreign media organisation, is also the largest composite hulled offshore patrol ship ever built in Turkey.

ARES 95 FAMB, which is designed as a new generation gunboat to perform hit-and-run missions that require high speed and maneuverability, can carry guided missiles. This 29 m long and aluminum hull ship has a top speed of 50 knots per hour. The ship can be equipped with remote-controlled weapon systems with automatic cannons for its own close defense and firing at ground targets. The ARES 95 FAMB platform is especially is suitable for European, African, and Middle Eastern countries and this was evinced by the representatives of the naval forces who showed great attention to it during the IDEF 2021 defence exhibition. Stating that the ARES 95 FAMB platform has the same firepower as a conventional gunboat, Alanç points out that this platform is a much more cost-effective solution, considering the initial supply costs, life cycle costs, and personnel requirements

Could we not have built it at home and just bought the control systems?

How many are we buying

. .
We are just buying the designs like every other new vessel we built and still building.

Ok..thats really cool. We need to really build, assemble as much as possible in country. We have no R&D capacity yet so this is the only route available to us.

. .
KSY, CDDL, WMS have R&D capacity if i am not wrong. (I am certain about KSY)

Can you expand on their capacity. What are they working on? Any discernable achievements?

My understanding is that they are increasing capacity and learning new techniques but never heard they are carrying out any R&D.

Well what do you know?

I just posted in the Navy Thread about the Tuzla class. Did not know that this large GFRP/CFRP version existed.

Honestly - I don't see this being practical in our Coast guard situation because this is a huge all-composite structure and may be difficult to do ToT on. Our yards are not used to do layups and curing on huge composite craft like this, it will need brand new investments in our case. The steel-welded Tuzla class (or modified/modernized version) is a better bet for ToT and local manufacture.

Now if you place waterjets on any ship of this size, it will do another ten knots up easily. Tuzla class does 25 knots, this one does 35 knots.

I have been on waterjet-powered passenger craft of this size (with gyro stablizers) which does 45-50 knots easily in open sea. But those are super-efficient wave-piercer catamaran designs.

Bangladesh Coast Guard allegedly will use ARES 150 HERCULES Offshore Patrol Ship

As reported by Defseca, Bangladesh will procure offshore patrol vessels from ARES Shipyard. In this context, it is stated that Bangladesh Coast Guard ordered ARES 150 HERCULES Offshore Patrol Ship from ARES Shipyard. Bangladesh Coast Guard Command (BSGK) is a law enforcement agency under the Ministry of Interior of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Coast Guard's mission is to control piracy and illegal trade, protect fisheries, oil, gas, forest resources and the environment in Bangladeshi waters and coastal areas, maintain order in sea ports and conduct rescue operations in coastal areas during natural disasters.

As reported by Navy Recognition, the Bangladeshi Government had launched a major modernization plan called Coast Guard Goal 2030 to make the Coast Guard a trained and equipped force. In this context, recruiting new personnel to the command is also on the agenda. BSGK currently uses 4 offshore patrol ships, 8 coastal patrol ships, 4 fast attack ships, 4 patrol ships and 5 river patrol ships. Apart from this, BSGK has 6 port patrol boats and 136 high speed patrol boats.

ARES 150 HERCULES Offshore Patrol Ship

The ARES 150 HERCULES Offshore Patrol Ship has a length of 48 meters. With a maximum speed of 35 knots (65 km per hour) and a range of 1,600 nautical miles (2,963 km), the ship is the world's fastest offshore patrol vessel. In this context, ARES 150 was awarded the “World's Best Offshore Patrol Ship” in 2018 by an independent maritime institution.

The ARES 150 is the largest composite ship in its class ever built. The ship is equipped with 12.7 mm and 30 mm remote-controlled weapon systems. In addition to its weapons, the ship has electro-optical sensors and extensive navigation equipment. In addition, ARES 150 has the capacity to carry 2 ARES 24 high-speed boats used in special operations.

Bet this would make a good yacht if enough attention is put into it.
looks sleek.

Yes commercial yacht wise there is a fairly large market for composite craft of this size.

Plenty of buyers in the West would spring for a modified passenger design which should not be very hard to do.

Turkey is one of the main centers of large luxury yacht building outside Germany. Lots of Turkish yards in that market.

Here is the Tuzla model I was talking about, which is a little larger than our Padma Class.

BCG wants four more OPVs. The CEO in the video said that they will design two types of OPVs for us. One is 40+ meters based on ARES 150 and the other is 50+ meters OPV. The CEO didn't say anything about the 50+ meters variants. That could be ARES 55. So expecting two vessels for two types.

Don't know why no one talked about the 50+ meters variant or mentioned completely different variant. Anyway i hope they get the modified version of ARES 150 with landing deck facility.

If you're expecting something about naval designs then no, they don't put much details on website but vaguely remember about one design, probably a small vessel. Don't know if Sea Horse HSV, Kenyan's CG's OPV and BN's oil tanker (i know this one is local) count or not.
