Bangladesh ambassador breaks the ice with Uzbek president; Dhaka's requests noted

April 24, 02:04 AM

Bangladesh wants Uzbekistan to establish the first Embassy of Uzbekistan in Dhaka and resumption of direct passenger flights on Dhaka-Tashkent-Dhaka route to enhance bilateral ties in the fields of tourism, education, sports and culture.

Ambassador of Bangladesh to Uzbekistan Md Zahangir Alam on Friday presented his credentials to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and drove home the points of common interest between the two countries.

He sought the assistance of President Mirziyoyev to make the first Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) meeting between the two countries, to be held on May 27, fruitful.

President Mirziyoyev asked his Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov, who was present, to open a Consulate of Uzbekistan in Dhaka initially, as well as to make the first FOC meeting between the two countries effective.

He assured, necessary steps would be taken after closer examination of the issue of direct flights with the former Soviet republic, that is rich in resources - it is a major cotton producer - and has a glorious Islamic heritage as the land of Samarkand.

On the same day, Ambassadors of the Czech Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, the European Union and Russia to Uzbekistan also presented their credentials.

During his conversation with Ambassador Alam, President Mirziyoyev conveyed his personal greetings to President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and sought assistance in expanding bilateral relations with Bangladesh.

Ambassador Alam assured to take appropriate steps in this regard and briefed the Uzbek leader on Bangladesh's success in RMG, textile, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute products and leather sectors.

The Bangladesh envoy, like the others, was welcomed into the presidential palace with much pomp and pageantry befitting a friendly nation, including a guard of honour.

Lol less people self reliant market they thinking they’ll sell stuff to Uzbeks? They got no money bruh
I think keeping tabs on their cotton is the primary motivation. Throw in some usual Ummah-Chummah brotherhood crap and you just might be able get them to vote at international forums in your favour.

There has to be some synergies somewhere besides cotton.

On the surface, Tashkent doesn't look bad.

Tashkent was destroyed in the 1966 Tashkent earthquake, but it was rebuilt as a model Soviet city. It was the fourth-largest city in the Soviet Union at the time, after Moscow, Leningrad and Kyiv.

Save your breath brother, these are showpiece Soviet style capitals.. useless.

Central Asian countries will never be anything meaningful, they're too docile for their own good.

Somethings were never meant to be.

Landlocked central Asian nations are untapped regions with mineral wealth and smaller moderate populations, compared to bustling South Asain nations.

Now this is what I call misplaced Bengali arrogance coming from two poster I usually respect but this is a big gaff that can't go unnoticed or unpunished.

Uzbekistan is far from broke. Have you ever seen the cities in Uzebkistan it is more developed then their East-European neighbours. There is mineral wealth on top of that.

These Central Asian states are more meaningful then Bangladesh and also more powerful.. We just saw one of the smallest of these 6 turkic states in central asia in war last year and they were well equipped and modern armed forces. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan under turkish close friendship and guidance are formidble entitiies in central asia and Turkey's backbone muscle. They are getting slowly armed with the best equipment.

As far as wealth goes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkemenistan are wealthy nations whereas Uzbekistan is middling economy not poor nor rich but in the middle. As far as development goes the country is well developed. They have nothing with Russia which itself is not rich it carries alot of package which the turkic central asian states doesn't carry. They are far better off that way. They will soon have free trading market with each other and Turkey.. Turkic council countries.

The Central Asian Turkic council states are very important and much more important then Bangladesh

Central Asian markets are untapped . maybe we can get access to Cotton from central Asian states and perhaps sell some of our goods. Hurry, Before the indians can get there 🏃‍♂️
Not sure about getting energy from them since they utilise pipelines and it would not be financially feasible.

What sea port(s) do central asian states use to trade with the rest of the world ?

Ice-breaking or what BD needs a good working relationship with Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan produces long fiber high-quality cotton while BD lands cannot do the same. I think Uzbek cotton is already being imported here. However, a sound diplomatic relationship is a necessity to expand the trade. This will benefit both countries.

You misunderstood, I meant to say, they will never be anything in a way that will be meaningful to us; Bangladeshis.

Natural resources are certainly a great asset for these countries but they need to be exploited in a way to render real growth.

These countries lack good leadership, the transition from the Soviet Union to independent republics was to say the least, ungainly.

They may look developed but ask yourself, is Uzbekistan from significant than a country like Romania ?

It's also about location, they're landlocked, which in short, is the worst thing that can happen to a country.

I could list so many other reasons as to why they have nothing for us as it stands right now.

But I'll just end with the fact that Bangladesh is a country of bad diplomacy, we have always focussed on the wrong set of ties, wrong priorities, wrong outlook... This is another one of those ventures, one among countless from which nothing will ever come for us.

Everything is from the perspective of my country, as for their cities, cities are not indicative of human development.

North Korea has a beautiful capital but does North Korea have something for Bangladesh ? No.

Coming to your preconceived notion about Bengalis and arrogance, which you've attributed my post to, such generalisation is disappointing but I can see how you could put the two and two together, perhaps, I could've been clearer on that I meant.

For India trade, Uzbekistan and other central asian countries use Chabahar Port in Iran through Afghanistan. For trade with BD the same route is supposed to be used.

I am not sure about their westward trade. May be their goods are transported via Caspian Sea, Russia, Black Sea and Bosphorus Strait.
