AGARTALA: Bangladesh has agreed to allow erection of barbed wire fencing on Zero-Line of Indo-Bangla international border in some patches of Tripura, official sources said here on Tuesday.

"Following India's request, Bangladesh government has agreed to allow construction of fencing on Zero-Line in some parts of the state," Tripura home secretary Manoj Kumar said.

Fencing in 5 km in Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura district which was stopped for quite long time following objections from Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG) would be started soon, he told reporters.

While fencing on Zero-Line at Mohanpur in West Tripura district and Kailashahar in newly-formed Unakoti district has almost been completed, he said.

Works in Kamalasagar in Sipahijala district and Belonia in South Tripura district would be started with the agreement of Bangladesh government.

The BBG had objected to adhere to Indira-Mujib treaty according to which no permanent structure in any form within the 150 yards of the Zero-Line could be constructed.

However, the state government had identified that some areas where erection of fencing 150 yards away from Zero Line would not be feasible and approached the Centre to seek permission from Bangladesh and after hectic parlance Sheikh Hasina government accepted the request.

About 75 per cent of the 856-km Indo-Bangla has so far been completed and remaining part would be fenced by end of this year, BSF sources said.

Why can't we have electrocuted fencing? That should stop most of the pole vaulting.

They should build a wall in the lines of great wall of china it will stop the cross over of terrorists, smugglers, beggars and illegal immigrants.

As for the fencing it can easily be crossed over and in some places these bangladeshi smugglers injects chemical into cows so that they get uneasy and starts running madly then they guide them towards fence and it get damaged.

India should build a damn big wall like china have built back in the days to keep the mongols away. After all they are the supa powa....you can't be building wire fences, we will simply come at dark, take it off and sell it off in our local market....you know what! Indians should build a damn moat and put in damn crocodiles in them like the medieval ages.....mehh that wouldnt work either.....we'll simply use them for new leather products.....i guess back the great wall of India...supa powa:china:

loose those budddddddy accent. Anyway, barbwire or whtever materials, india is sepeperating boarder with structure and calling it not permanent; that is just another indian deception. But more importantly why indian violating the treaty and not constructing the fence 150 yard from zero line? It goes to show indian motive and deception.

Indira-Mujib treaty expired..and can you post any proof that in international border you can't erect a barb wire fence within 150 m from zero line???

LOL buddy if its with BD agreement, then its as per the treaty, after all the treaty is between BD and India, buddy.

In any case its for protection of BD from Indians flooding your wonderful land with Indian immigrants, the same land we are either making into a desert or flooding, depending on which jamati buddy's crying one is lending an ear to.

The Indian government has assured Bangladesh that the historical 1974 Indira-Mujib treaty will be considered for ratification after discussion in the parliament, Home Minister Shahara Khatun told the cabinet on Monday.

During her recent visit to India, Shahara held talks with her Indian counterpart, P Chidambaram, and the Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee where she urged them to ratify the treaty.

In response, the two leaders assured Shahara that they would place the treaty in the next session of the parliament for discussion, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting.

Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi signed the treaty with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1974 to settle border issues between the two neighbouring countries.

During Shahara’s February 24-25 visit, India also assured that it will hand over two convicts in the Bangabandhu murder case – Captain Majed and Risalder Moslehuddin – if found in India.

India also proposed Shahara to set up barbed wire fences along 167 locations on the Indo-Bangla border.
