BANGLADESH: A section of media spreading propaganda against BNP

BNP joint secretary general also alleges rival Awami League party is spreading propaganda

The Daily Star
Friday, December 19, 2008

BNP Joint Secretary General Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday alleged that a section of the media is not acting responsibly, saying that false propaganda is going on against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

"A section of the media is spreading propaganda against the BNP candidates either deliberately or under provocation," he told reporters at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office.

The BNP spokesperson, however, did not mention names of any media organisations.

Referring to a newspaper report that a grand alliance candidate in Rajshahi is distributing money among voters, Nazrul Islam said the Election Commission has not taken any action against that candidate even after publication of the report.

He also criticised the Awami League, saying that it is also spreading propaganda against BNP.

CG, AL out to make country a vassal state: Khaleda

Former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday said if voted to power her government would form new pay commission to enhance salaries and other facilities of the government officials and employees.

Addressing a number of election rallies at different places in Gazipur, Tangail and Mymensingh districts, the BNP Chairperson called upon the people to cast their votes in favour of the four-party alliance candidates to ensure country's peace, progress and development.

"Miseries of two years of the caretaker government will end if BNP is voted to power," she said adding people are not with those who had created anarchy by killing people in the streets in broad day light.

"I urge you all to vote for the sheaf of paddy, to bring an end to the agonies," she said while addressing an election rally at Konabari College ground in Gazipur.

Addressing another rally in Mymensingh, the former prime minister promised that the greater Mymensingh would be made an administrative division if the four-party alliance is voted to power.

She referred to AL's 'Logi-boitha' movement saying that the country is now on the brink of destruction just for that anarchy created by Awami League.

Khaleda Zia said those who had said that present Caretaker Government was the outcome of their movement are trying to get back to power by misguiding the people.

"You don't make this mistake, cast your votes for those who will work for you," she said.

She accused the present Caretaker Government and Awami League government of trying to make the country a vassal state.

"They (caretaker government) wanted to make the country a vassal state and a particular party assisted them to go to power through the back door," she said while addressing a rally on Bashail court premises in Tangail.

She said the AL wanted to make the country a vassal state through various maneuverings and a remote control but people foiled that move.

Begum Zia also addressed rallies at Konabari College Ground, Shakhipur, Ghatail, Goplapur, Kalihati Degree College, Madhupur, Muktagacha, Mymensingh Circuit House Maidan and Trisal Nazrul College Ground in the districts in Gazipur, Tangail and Mymensingh.

At the rallies, she introduced party candidates Chowdhury Tanveer Ahmed Siddiqui (Gazipur-1), Hasanuddin Sarker (Gazipur-2) and Prof MA Mannan (Gazipur-3), Fakir Mahbub Anam Swapan (Tangail-1), Sultan Salahuddin Tuku (Tangail-2), Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad (Tangail-3), Lutfar Rahman Matin (Tangail-4), Mahmudul Hasan (Tangail-5), Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan (Tangail-8) and Mohammad Zakir Hossain (Mymensingh-4), AKM Mosharraf Hossain (Mymensingh-5), and Dr Mahbubur Rahman Liton ((Mymensingh-7).

The BNP Chairperson also promised that all necessary measures would be taken to bring down the prices of essentials, including that of rice and pulse, if the BNP-led alliance is voted to power. "The four-party alliance only can reduce the price of essentials," she said.

She highlighted the party election pledges to increase food production and create employment if the four-party alliance went to power.

The former prime minister, who was scheduled to return to Dhaka last night, launched her election campaign on December 12 after visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal and Hazrat Shah Paran (RH) in Sylhet.

'Save the country, end conspiracy'

Munshiganj, Dec 21 (bdnews24.com) – BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia urged voters in Munshiganj on Sunday to back the four-party alliance to save the country from catastrophe and end all conspiracy.

"If you vote for the right party in the Dec 29 election it is possible to get over the current crises of the country," Khaleda told an election rally at Sree Nagar Stadium in Munshiganj.

"Only the BNP led four-party alliance will be able to free the country from catastrophe."

The BNP chief started for Barisal from her Dhaka Cantonment home at around 9:30am. She stopped at the stadium in Munshiganj en route to address supporters and canvass votes for BNP candidate Shah Moazzem who is running for Munshiganj-1.

The two-time former prime minister also claimed: "One party conspired in the Jan 22, 2007, election knowing that it would not be able to win. That's why the election was not held. The conspiracy is still ongoing."

She asked people to bring an end to that conspiracy by voting for the right representative.

Citing BNP's sheaf of paddy symbol as the symbol of development, prosperity, democracy, independence and sovereignty, Khaleda said: "You have to vote for the sheaf of paddy to safeguard the country and people."

"This time our slogan is 'save the country save the people'."

"If we are elected in this election we will bring progress and development," she said.

The BNP chairperson went on to address another rally at Louhojong Bazaar and sought votes for Munshiganj-2 candidate Mizanur Rahman Sinha.

Khaleda pledged to complete the Padma Bridge and bring down the prices of commodities if voted to power.

She is set to address a public rally at Bells Park in Barisal in the afternoon. On her way back to the capital she is scheduled to speak at rallies at Faridpur and Manikganj.
