World Economic Forum releases Global Competitiveness Index 2013-14

Bangladesh has been ranked 110th in the Global Competitiveness Index 2013-14 in a list of 148 countries worldwide.

The index, prepared by a Switzerland-based organization World Economic Forum, saw Bangladesh slide three places since the 2012-13 ranking.

The report is said to assess the competitiveness landscapes of the 148 countries, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.

Switzerland retains its 2012-13 ranking, coming out as the most competitive country this year, followed by Singapore and Finland. United States is ranked fifth.

There are three Asian countries in the top 10: Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, and Japan.

China remains at the 29th position.

Neighbouring India slipped one place to be ranked 60th this year and Pakistan dropped nine places to 133.

The World Economic Forum describes itself as “an independent international organisation committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.”

The organisation is said to have no affiliations with political partisan or national interests.
