The character of great men and women are revealed when they are under stress. Recently discovered letters written in 1950 open our eyes to the then emerging greatest Bangalee of all times Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

In 1996, when Sheikh Hasina first became the prime minister of Bangladesh, she learned about the existence of a secret file maintained by the Pakistan Intelligence Branch during the period of 1948-1971 that covered the activities of Bangabandhu. This remarkable file is now being published in multiple volumes titled ‘Secret Documents of Intelligence Branch on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’. Volume 1 (1948-1950) was recently launched.

It is a treasure trove of history unknown to all until now.

Page by page, we see the Pakistan government’s record on the daily activities of Bangabandhu. We are able to comprehend his thoughts, feelings and state of mind as he goes about planning and engaging in political activities revolving around the struggle for a fairer and better treatment for Bangalees, for the realisation of their legitimate rights and for the preservation of their culture and language. This struggle under Bangabandhu’s leadership would ultimately lead to the emergence of an independent Bangladesh.

Bangabandhu was referred to, at times, as “Security Prisoner Sheikh Mujibur” by the Pakistan Intelligence Branch.

This commentary deals with two letters, both written in English and in his own handwriting. In a letter addressed to ‘Jonab’ Suhrawardy dated 21/12/1950, while he was in Faridpur jail, Security Prisoner Sheikh Mujibur wrote: “…those who are prepared to die for any cause are seldom defeated. Great things are achieved through great sacrifices. Allah is more powerful than anybody else, and I want justice from Him.”

It was a powerful statement from the man who would lead East Pakistan out of repression and exploitation to establish Bangladesh.

Sheikh Mujibur goes on to remind Suhrawardy that he needed books in prison:

You should not forget that I am alone and books are the only companion of mine.

Earlier in the letter, Sheikh Mujibur complained that he was jailed in Faridpur although his case was to be tried in Gopalganj requiring him to go back and forth. He bemoaned the trip taking 60 hours one way and that the route and the conveyance used was “proverbially tiresome”.

The Pakistan authorities kept this letter and did not allow it to be delivered. It was later found in the Special Branch files.

In another confiscated letter to a relative Jepu, from the Dhaka central jail on 26/5/1950, Security Prisoner Sheikh Mujibur wrote:

…but you should know, to the man who lives for an idea, for his country, for the good of humanity, life has an extensive meaning, and to that extent pain becomes less important to him. I know that the world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those who feel.

The last sentence sums up the attitude of too many around us.

Still, the Security Prisoner observed:

I am definite that in the long war between falsehood and truth, falsehood always won the first battle and truth the last.

And he angrily reacts to the suggestion from his relative that if he tells the Pakistan authorities that he will not engage in politics, he could be released from prison:

I cannot understand how you can dare to write this very word ‘bond’ to me. I do not know how to bow down my head to any man except Allah- the Almighty.”

His command of language, his strength of character, his faith in the Almighty, great personal suffering, firm belief that truth always triumphs over falsehood, appreciation of the pain felt by the downtrodden, realisation that without sacrifice goals cannot be reached, to compromise was betraying oneself, adherence to ideals and principles, striving for nation building and passion for serving humanity, are all evident from these letters written way back in 1950. He was only 30 years old at that time.

It is therefore not at all surprising that over the next 21 years, his single mindedness of purpose, dedication, sacrifice and leadership and much more resulted in the birth of our beloved Bangladesh after a war of liberation in which millions sacrificed their lives and honour and Security Prisoner Sheikh Mujibur became Bangabandhu, the father of our nation.

Interesting post from our 'Darbesh'. His mother was Pakistani by the way and most top officers and a large number of Textile supervisors in his company BEXIMCO are expats from Pakistan.

Put it in the proper context.

I cannot understand how you can dare to write this very word ‘bond’ to me. I do not know how to bow down my head to any except Bharat Mata.”

One of the greatest world leaders of all time and certainly the best from Asia.

. .
Almost every leader in history worth his salt has been killed via a conspiracy of insiders. Bhutto, Zia, Benazir are 3 from Pakistan alone. Erdogan had a coup attempted against him - was that his fault?

The actions of assassin's do not define the legacy of a leader.

Ps .Very interesting read, regardless of whether people support his daughter or not, Shk Mujib was a special leader.

.
why did they kill him?
Rivalry between who was the "Actual" father of Bangla nation.
Major Zia Ur Rehman was the person who started teh real Bagladeshi freedom when he took over Chittagong radio and on his own accord declared Bangladesh as free country. That started the chain reaction. Until then the Police and paramilitary were fighting alongside the Pakistan army against India and Mukti Bahini.
As the announcement was made by Major Zia (Later General and President Zia) the police and paramilitary revolted and that triggered the sequence leading up to Pakistani army surrender.
The original radio broadcast had no mention of sheikh Mujeeb. Later doctored vesrions claimed that Major Zia acted on behalf of Mujeeb, which he did not. Mujeeb was in Mianwali jail at the time and had no idea of whats happening in East Pakistan.
He was released from Prison after Pakistan army surrender under a deal between Bhutto and Indra Gandhi. One month later Mujeeb came back to BD and claimed to be "Father of the nation" and that did make some his enemies.
No wonder Zia Ur Rehman's wife and Sheikh Haseena wajid are bitter rivals to this date.

And, not a single BD folk protested, or voluntarily attended his Jenaza Namaz....

As for Reis Erdo'an, even common folks threw themselves under the fully armed Leopard tanks!!! As for Mujib, his most trusted 3K paramilitary forces surrendered without firing a single shot to the officer riding on a lone tank without any shells!!! Not a single BD Muslim came out to protest, or shed a single drop of tears!!! Although only 14 officers in command of a platoon of soldiers conducted the ops, the entire army stood still and gave allegiance to the Muslim government who overthrew Mujib!!!!

So it becomes clear that he was not a hero for Bd people but now Modi and Gremlin are making him a hero for Bd ..people..how can a traitor be a hero..is beyond me

He's the father of our nation and one of the greatest leaders in southeast Asia. Modi won't have to promote something that's already established.

According to BBC pole he's the greatest bengali of all time who freed us from the traitor West Pakistan regime that looted our money for years and didn't give our well deserved right.

But you guys did not even attend his funeral and all sissies were hiding when he got dispatched out of this world by your army..

Why? For creating an artificial famine via humongous corruption, and thereby causing 1m folks to perish!!! Or, instigating his party goons to kill 1m Muhajir folks irrespective of old, women, children and babies!!! Or, killing ~40K ex-Mukti Bahini folks without any proper trials!!! Or, abolishing democracy to install one-party rule under his perpetual family-based President-ship with the slogan like "one country, one leader"!!!

This proves that BD folks could figure him out much better than the Pak establishment, and sorted him out in a fashion Pak Army couldn't even think of!!! Shame on the Pak generals....

And, what a bowing!!!!
  • Replaced Ay-Yildiz (Hilal ve Sitara), the banner under which tens of millions have been drinking the Sherbet-i Shehadet in Jenk-i Jihat spread over the entire known world for the Din ve Ummet ve Vatan ve Devlet-i Islam, with that of the Sun, the symbol of Mitra, Somnath, Sun-God etc.
  • Replaced Saya-i Huda-i Zul Jelal (Pak national anthem) with the one written by Tagore to inspire the Hindu folks to rebel against the British to abrogate the Division of Bengal in 1905, which made East Bengal and Asam into one province and thereby benefited the Muslim folks against the extreme Hindu tyranny. Basically, he replaced a song commemorating the Muslim victory over the Hindus with a song celebrating the Hindu victory over the Muslims. In 1911, Division of Bengal was finally abrogated after the Hindu insurgents killed quite a number of the British officers, and the BD Muslims continued under the Hindu oppression till the creation of Pak.
  • Took out every reference of Islam, including Bismillah, from the constitution.
  • Even the name of Alleme Ikbal was taken out from the educational institutions named after him, and were replaced with those of the Hindu folks.
  • In the late 60s Pak started a project for a counter barrage on the Ganges/Padma in response to the starting of the construction of an Indian barrage, which would make a huge part of the East Pak into desert. The Pak counter-barrage would flood 6 districts of the West Bengal under 10 feet water, and seriously hamper the navigation of the Calcutta Port!!! The Indians stopped the construction and wanted to negotiate with Pak, who, however, went ahead with the floating of contract for the construction!!! No wonder Mujib and his cohorts were immediately activated!!! Needless to say, that barrage, known as Farakka, was completed during Mujib's rule!!! The rest is history...
  • BD is the most successful RAW ops - B Raman, ex deputy chief of RAW in his book "KAOboys".
  • We have taken the revenge for the thousand years old Muslim rule - Indian PM Indira Gandhi after the creation of BD
  • BD is like Sita, recaptured from Ravana by Ram - a BJP leader
