Design of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport
The construction cost is estimated at Tk50,000 crore involving building three runways with 14,500 feet length each

The construction of the planned most-modern new airport titled Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport will start within the next one and a half years, said Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday.

While talking exclusively to the Dhaka Tribune, the minister said: “The construction of the airport will begin in 2018.”

The government has already selected Nippon KoEI Co Limited, a Japanese consulting firm, to conduct the feasibility study of the proposed airport.

The study is expected to complete by June, 2017 at a cost of Tk120 crore.

“The main objective of the project is to construct a new modern international airport and to create a hub airport in this region and meet growing traffic demand of the country,” said the minister.

The existing infrastructure facilities of the main gateway of the country, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, are insufficient to meet the future air traffic demand and there are some constraints to expand the airport, he added.

Three sites – ‘Char Janajat’ in Madaripur district, ‘Keyain and Latobdi’ in Munshiganj district and Char Bilashpur in Dhaka district – have primarily been selected for establishing the airport, according to officials of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

After the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase on Wednesday, additional Secretary to the Cabinet Division M Mostafizur Rahman said the cabinet selected Nippon to conduct the feasibility study of the airport and the government will finance the entire feasibility cost.

According to the project proposal, the construction cost is estimated at Tk50,000 crore involving building three runways with 14,500 feet length each.

The airport area will cover 8,000 acre of land and take about 10 years to complete the project.

It took 17 years to complete the construction work of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport which stretches across 2,000 acres of land.

For site selection, feasibility study team will verify all factors, including cost and risk benefits, economic and financial impacts, financing and airport operation strategy, environmental impact assessment and environmental management plant.

Once the new airport is completed, it will make significant contribution to the national GDP like aerotropolis Dubai International Airport. The ideal aerotropolis is an amalgam of convention hotels, hospitals, cargo complexes, factories and the future of large city.

The Bangabandhu airport will be connected through a link route to the Proposed Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Route (Motijheel to Diabari Depot).

In 2009, after assuming power, the government announced to build Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport.

i am all for infrastructure projects.... but given that dhaka airport is not fully utilised i am unclear the need for a new airport..... as to becoming a hub....i am unclear how this is to be achieved...

proper projection of future demand should determine this project.... dhaka already has two airport.... where is this going to be?

Considering so much time it takes for us to implement a project, they should start developing the new airport so that it will come online in next decade. :)

I would prefer the money is spent to upgrade/build the railway to connect say Sylhet-Dhaka, and also a bridge over the part of the Padma near Sirajgamj to allow road/rail connectivity between Dhaka and the Northwest of BD.

No need to construct this airport for another decade as the existing airport expansion should suffice

@ Bangladesh is a riverine country specially south of Dhaka all the major river joins here. Moreso every alternate year we are facing flood. Is not south of Dhaka is a low lying area ? Why not to move North towards Trishal or towards Norsindi. It is necessary to go towards or nearer to Gopalganj ??? It is pretty sure Awami Leaque will make 1 x Airport named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport today or tomorrow.

@ But I think some thing coming over------ soon !! " Ab tera kia hoga re kalia ".

Though South of Dhaka the area surrounded by Padma Meghna river from North to East and BoB from south is a low lying area, it never goes under water like the north areas of BD. Some places in the south stay under water all around year because of water mismanagement or by their nature. Moreover the land availability south of Padma is much easier than elsewhere. And Gov will necessarily try to build new airport very close to Dhaka for obvious reasons. Trisal shouldnt be in cards due to long distance and heavy traffic hassle as we know to cross Gazipur. And Gov tried to set up the airport at Munshiganj first and deadly clash erupted. Keeping that in mind, people of the new proposed areas are freely offering their lands, so no wonder where it will be built. And two of the areas said here are north of Padma river and one in south, all are very close to Dhaka N ganj twin cities..

Why don't y'all rename the country bangabandhudesh? Suits better. Bloody idiots. And before building a new one... fully utilize the current Dhaka airport and do some maintenance... it's a shame to call this a international airport.... have any of you gone to the washroom? You will know what I mean.

I think Bangladesh should develop other cities and make airports there . Why is everything located inside Dhaka? The difference between Dhaka and chittagong is alot .

Dhaka = 17-18 million population
Chittagong = 5 -6 million

Why is there such a humongous difference in population between the two largest cities ?
I Don't think there is any space left in Dhaka for anymore developments . It's already full to its core and spilling out .

This is the big problem in BD.

The country really needs to build up other cities like Sylhet, Khulna etc rather than this reliance on Dhaka.

Look at this old article. They tried to choose Char areas in 2011 and it went nowhere.

The point is that - the low lying areas south of Dhaka aren't stable or will be hard to protect from sea level rise.

Though South of Dhaka the area surrounded by Padma Meghna river from North to East and BoB from south is a low lying area, it never goes under water like the north areas of BD. This is the sad part. They're giving up on something close to the Dhaka Mymensingh corridor because of some political reason. But that is actually the best area geographically as its 50 to 100 feet higher generally than sea level and is based on red clay solid substrate. Varendra (Barind) area was chosen by ancient kings as areas for Buddhist universities (Viharas) Because of this exact reason.

Letting some goons control progress is akin to 'Mogher Mulluk'. Get the special branch in there, round up the usual main troublemakers with RAB and control the situation. And compensate the displaced well a la Padma bridge project.

If these uneducated gandoos don't understand eminent domain then it is time to teach them a lesson.

Only in Bangladesh. :rolleyes::rolleyes1:

Click the link above that shows the location of Char Bilashpur in Munshiganj Zilla. It is a real char/river shoal extending almost in north to south direction longitudinally. Anywhere on the other side of the Jamuna or Padma river is too far. So, my personal choice is Char Bilashpur, at least on the merit of its location.

1) Bilashpur lies at the Dhaka side.
1) It is almost equidistant from all the important urban points.
2) It elongates from north to south giving a proper length to build runways. North-south runways are a required element because wind blows north-south or south-north throughout the year.

However, my best choice lies with a Char somewhere in Aricha, because its proximity is almost same from Sylhet/Mymensingh, Chittagong/Teknaf, Rangpur/Dinajpur and Khulna/Jessore.

Dude what is so special about 50-100 feet elevation? I think only 4m is enough as required to Kansai airport, artificially built in the sea but for safety elevated to 14m level. The proposed sites above fluctuates around 8-16m above sea and more can be done for construction. And if this airport is built in this area, will serve better to Dhaka/Narayanganj people and Sylhet/Chittagong/Comilla people will freely move avoiding Dhaka traffic, plus advantage of Southern BD people. I think this way more people will be benefited than that of Uttara. And about viahara, more vihar sites were found in Munshiganj areas and frequented by ancient rulers, and none if you compare with Mymensingh. And Rajshahi we are not comparing but if Comilla could offer could be something.

The better jobs and opportunities are all in Dhaka so it naturally attracts everyone in Bangladesh to come study and work.

Govt. has plans to move industries and govt. offices out to suburban exurban areas of Dhaka but it will take time.

The entire city of Dhaka is on Google maps. You can take a look. There are outlying suburbs. It is dense but things will get better with time.

Did you ever visit?
