Baidu sets sights on Brazil, Indonesia, India markets

2015-09-11

China's search engine giant, Baidu Inc, is eyeing Brazil, Indonesia and India as key regions for its global expansion, said the company's president Zhang Yaqin in Beijing on Tuesday.

"We chose target countries which are similar to China, with large populations and at the eve of the outbreak of mobile Internet development," said Zhang at the company's annual technology event, Baidu World Conference.

"These countries may lag behind China in terms of mobile Internet for two or three years, but we saw their potential for growth in the future," Zhang added.

Baidu will focus on mobile products for overseas expansion, said Zhang. "We have 700 million mobile product users in about 200 countries in the world and 250 million active users monthly. We rank No 1 in more than ten countries' Android systems."

China's O2O sector is ahead of other countries in some ways, even the United States, said Zhang. "We hope to apply China's experience, technologies and products to other countries."

Li Yanhong, founder of the online search giant announced in June to invest 20 billion yuan ($3.23 billion) into boosting its online-to-offline arm, its group-buying business Nuomi, within three years.

The world's No 2 Internet search engine bought control of Brazilian online-discount company Peixe Urbano late last year, the latest step in a push to expand into Latin America's largest economy.

"After joining the Baidu family for nine months, Peixe Urbano saw business sales up 130 percent and became one of the leaders among group buying websites in Brazil," said Alexander Tabor, founder and CEO of the Brazilian equivalent of Groupon.

"We learned a lot from the Chinese counterpart, Nuomi.com, which was also acquired by Baidu last year. For example, we introduced push instead of e-mail only for marketing. Now push accounts for 16 percent in the overall income through the mobile terminals," Tabor added.

Baidu's international market strategy is to integrate into the global ecosystem, said Hu Yong, general manager of Baidu's global business unit.

"With a team capable of international market development, research and operation and with a good understanding of the international market, we could be a supplement to the global ecosystem or constructor, but not the spoiler," Hu added.

Baidu Map's Smart Bus function is amazing, u know where all buses of a certain bus route are. Baidu Map's navigation is free, you can pre-download a map package of some provinces so that very little data is required when u navigate. (I have all maps of China in my APP, data-free!!)

BTW, Baidu has an O2O APP called Baidu Nuomi(sticky rice:-)), with it u can buy movie ticket, order hotel, order food delivery, buy concert tickets, etc. Literally everything u can imagine in your life! There are similar APPs like Wechat, Qunar, Alibaba's Alipay, etc. China's O2O market is way ahead of any country in the world.

Alibaba's Alipay
I have all my savings in Alipay.
Even u don't have credit card, u can still buy stuff by instalment.
U can use it in a lot of shops, done in one second.
There is an independent credit score inside, u can get your visa done if your score is high.
(I am one my way to a visa of western countries without any documents, soon!)

The image of Baidu as Chinese company will make it hard to break into Indian and other overseas markets.

Yes..Baidu is interested in Indian markets, but as an investor in Indian startups and technology companies and not in introducing its search engine in India.

Baidu announces new virtual assistant to compete with Google Now on Android
September 10, 2015

Chinese search giant Baidu announced its own virtual assistant at its annual World Conference earlier this week. Named Duer, which roughly translates into Du Secretary, it is the first Chinese competitor to go against Siri, Cortana, and Google Now.

Baidu Duer will be available on the Android search app. It will initially provide services for three categories: dining, movies, and pets, but more categories will be available in the near future, including health care, education, and finance.

Baidu chief executive officer Robin Li demonstrated the capabilities of Duer by asking it to find a nice restaurant in the Gulou area that allows pets. The virtual assistant was able to locate a restaurant and send a reservation without any issues.

Comparing it to the three main virtual assistants in the United States, Baidu Duer is quite basic. It is less about information and more about connecting users with services and businesses, creating an autonomous middleman to do all the heavy lifting.

It is hard for Baidu to implement the same level of integration as Siri on iOS, Google Now on Android or Cortana on Windows, since it does not have its own mobile platform. Baidu may build its own Duer app in the future or add the virtual assistant into a real-life robot.

Baidu invested $3 billion into creating online-to-offline services in the next three years. Duer is a crucial part of that investment, allowing Baidu’s 700 million mobile users to find and connect to businesses.

Baidu Maps will also receive Duer integration, alongside group-buying service Nuomi. Baidu intends to add Duer to all of its services, getting past the current rut of platform integration.

Google plans to bring back its Google Play services to Android in China. This could hurt Baidu Duer’s growth in the future, especially if Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei promote Google Now.

I don't think it will work. Google has a tremendous presence in India, and works very well. Even if we were to ignore all the security dilemmas that every one will continue to face, and will be reminded by media, Baidu isn't as technically apt a company as Google, and has very little hold in English Markets.

Plus, while China is a home ground for Baidu, India is not. Rather, Google will feel far more comfortable in India because of the presence of a huge number of Indian employees and general hold over the wider world Internet, especially that in English.

I haven't used Baidu, but many people (those who are bilingual and have work in China) that Google is far better.

Baidu for search and library, Baidu map for mobile navigation. Cloud services for files.
Alipay and Taobao for e purchase. Weibo and WeChat for SNS, very convenient
Baidu should learn something from Baidu Japan.
Have fun.

Baidu is more than map and searching engine, it has presence in O2O.
Google cannot win here, no body speaks English in their daily life in China.
I use Google for English, Baidu for Chinese.
I started to use Baidu long before Google left China cause google sucks in Chinese searching.

Baidu to introduce online-to-offline model for smartphone users
SANGEETHA CHENGAPPA

BENGALURU, SEPTEMBER 10: Baidu, China’s biggest search engine with over 75 per cent market share, is in the process of building up an ecosystem of partners to introduce its successful O2O (online-to-offline) model to Indian smartphone users.

“Everyone has shifted to mobile in China and we at Baidu also made that shift recently and as a result have been putting more energies and resources into O2O in China, which has worked very well for us. We want to leverage that experience and introduce O2O for Indian smartphone users,” said Joshua Fern, Senior Marketing Manager – International Marketing Department, Baidu, who here to participate in the Global Mobile Internet Congress 2015. Explaining how O2O works, Fern said: “Our Baidu app is a single point entry into many O2O verticals. If you open the Baidu app, you have at your fingertips the ability to search for and purchase movie tickets, chart out the route to the movie hall, book a cab and even choose your exact seats in the movie theatre; all through this one app on your smartphone.

“We can do this with our extensive network of local partnerships on the ground in China, and create a seamless experience for smartphone users.”

Baidu introduced four of its apps in India at the beginning of this year – Du Battery Saver, Du Speed Booster, Mobile Market and ES that can be downloaded for free. The company is in the process of building partnerships in India that will increase its user base.

“Du Battery Saver and Du Speed Booster each have 8 million active users a month in India, which we have gained organically. We have already partnered with Quikr, Myntra, Snapdeal and Flipkart to monetise on our traffic of 8 million active users a month. We can use our traffic and create inroads for them, to buy from Myntra, Quikr, Snapdeal or Flipkart and look at mutual benefits from our respective user bases. We will also offer space for these partner apps on our apps,” said Fern.

Baidu is looking to end the year with a team size of 10 people in sales, marketing, business development and product support.

Not really. Baidu is far better in Chinese search as it understands Chinese mindset, user preference, and culture. Google is better in English search. It is that simple. It's not that complicated.
