Indian baby girl rescued from burning rubbish dump
Indian baby girl rescued from burning rubbish dump | My Sinchew
LUCKNOW, Saturday 23 October 2010 (AFP) - An abandoned newborn baby girl was recovering in hospital on Saturday after being rescued from a burning rubbish dump in northern India, police said.
The infant, who had been left on the dump in the town of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh state, suffered burns when the waste was set ablaze by a municipal worker.
The worker heard the baby's cries after he lit the fire and grabbed the child, but before he could put the flames out the girl suffered burns on her back and lower limbs.
She was admitted to a hospital emergency ward.
"The little one is improving but it will take some time before she can be completely out of danger," Dr A.K. Bharti told AFP at the hospital in Ghazipur, which is 300 kilometres (180 miles) from state capital Lucknow.
Police believe that the baby was abandoned on Friday and are now trying to track down the child's parents.
Officers said they suspected the incident to be a case of attempted female infanticide.
The practice of killing female foetuses and infants is rampant in India despite attempts by authorities to crack down on the illegal practices.
Many parents regard daughters as financial burdens and sons as breadwinners.
In parts of India, the *** ratio hovers between 800-850 females to 1,000 males.
Thanks Allah the baby is safe and sound.
