Bangladesh has made a significant progress in readymade garments (RMG) export to global market, especially the USA and European market, ensuring its position ahead of India and Pakistan.

Market expansion in South Korea, Japan, South Africa and China apart from key RMG export market -- the USA and European Union – has played a role in marking the progress.

“We’re ahead of India and Pakistan in terms of RMG export,” Commerce Minister GM Quader told Parliament on Wednesday while responding a starred question of Begum Sanjida Khanam (Dhaka-8).

He said Bangladesh’s market in the 27 EU countries, apart from the USA, Japan, Canada and Turkey, has expanded more than that of India and Pakistan.

Providing data in favour of his claim, the minister said Bangladesh earned US$ 19559.08 million by exporting RMG to those countries in 2011, while India US$ 10252.59 million and Pakistan US$ 3746.30 million.

Bangladesh had earned US$ 19089.73 million through exporting RMG during 2011-2012 against US$ 13736.76 and US$ 4078.81 million achieved by India and Pakistan respectively, he said.

Data show that Bangladesh’s export income is 139 percent higher than India and 468 percent than Pakistan, GM Quader said.

Because you guys are our only regional contenders :D well yeah, our rmg basically earns the most in the region from Europe and the reporter probably did that to make it look cooler :P

Bangladesh has made themselves as hub of RMG manufacturing, so they will be ahead in it, no doubt. Congrats!

next step light manufactured goods and ship building. If we liberalise the economy, reduce red tape and fight corruption you'll see this little tiger really roar. 10-15 years I would say, saw similar patern in south east asian countries. keep it going ....

This is already happening.

BD's economy will grow around 7% a year this decade and other sectors like shipbuilding, pharma and IT should become multi-billion dollar exports earners by the end of the decade.

RMG will still remain the backbone with tens of billions of dollars in export earnings but this will provide the necessary funds to allow other industries to develop.

As far as current corruption level is concerned this is something that BD will just have to put up with for at least another ten years since the current AL/BNP nonsense will continue as it has done for the last 2 decades.

7% growth is awesome
if maintained just for a single decade
would change Bangladesh alot and much more developed

It is already doing around this level and predicted by most organisations into the future.

Do not let your hatred of Awami League stop you from seeing the progress that is being made, even though little of it is due to the party in power.

Yes, the economy should be doing better but that is the situation that BD is in with the two party's for the last 20 years - AL/BAL.

Wow these guys are already boasting of their RMG export :cheesy:.

Do you guys realize that India, Pak have a long way to go yet, but BD has by far the longest way to in South Asia. Why comparing with us .

Bangladesh's current growth rate is ~6.3%.

Information technology? Depends. If from a local perspective under the current developments, it is fine.

However, if Bangladesh is to set up a world-class IT industry, it would be difficult and costly.

Back in the 90's (Zia administration), the key technologically advanced nations were offering others improved telecommunications connectivity. Bangladesh was offered.

However, the people at DGFI and NSI opposed, and it never happened. It is for this reason that Bangladesh is not on par with that of India's (example) IT industry.

Their reasons: Security.

The decision makers never even bothered to even look into the long term impacts of the technology being offered. That's what happens when a bunch of impulsive and greedy illiterates are in power.

It's possible to make it world-class, but it would be costly, difficult and a long one.

Awami League's "digital Bangladesh" is a joke, and was simply used as bait to lure voters. And yes, I have seen the results myself.
