Ministers of two countries signed the relevant deal

Moscow and Yerevan have created a joint military division and agreed upon a cooperation plan for the next year, Russian media said on Wednesday, November 30.

The agreement was signed between Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Armenian counterpart Vigen Sargsyan.

Shoigu said Russia was ready to expand military cooperation with Armenia, pointing at ‘historically good partnership' between the two countries.

The new agreement follows the previous deal between Yerevan and Moscow in the military sphere. In December 2015 they created Joint regional anti-air defense in the Caucasus.

Yerevan has been traditionally friendly relations with Russia as Armenia experiences tensions with neighboring Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Russia to assist in soonest settlement of Karabakh conflict - Karasin
BAKU. Dec 2 (Interfax) - Moscow will support efficient measures towards the peaceful resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin as saying.

"Russia will continue to support efficient measures towards the soonest peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict," Karasin said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov in Baku, in the course of political consultations between the two foreign ministries.

The 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Baku will be observed in 2017, Karasin said, adding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has invited his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov to visit Russia.

The Russian deputy foreign minister thanked Azerbaijan for backing up at the UN General Assembly Russia's draft of a resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism and for co-authoring this document.

In turn, Khalafov said that Baku and Moscow had been developing cooperation in all areas, including politics, the economy, energy, military-technical issues, humanitarian affairs, education, tourism, agriculture and migration, and said that Russian companies were successfully doing business in Azerbaijan.

"Azerbaijani-Russian collaboration is strategic," the deputy minister said.

"The sides discussed ways of settling the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and Moscow's efforts in the capacity of an intermediary of the peace negotiations, as well as negotiations tasked with defining the legal status of the Caspian sea, cooperation and mutual support at international organizations, etc.," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

BAKU, Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani troops shot down an Armenian drone detected flying over Azeri military positions, the defense ministry in Baku said on Sunday.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was destroyed Sunday morning in the western Tovuz region near the border with Armenia, the statement said.

The ministry also said that the Armenian army had violated the cease-fire 51 times in the past 24 hours, firing mortars from different directions on the front line.

The Azerbaijani army destroyed five Armenian drones last year: one in April, one in November and three in December.

The two countries remain in dispute over the occupied Karabakh region.

Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan in 1991 with Armenian military support and a peace process has yet to be implemented.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a six-year war over occupied Karabakh in the early 1980s until a 1994 ceasefire.

Since the end of war in 1994, Armenia and Azerbaijan have held talks under the supervision of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Minsk Group.

An agreement-in-principle was reached in St. Petersburg, Russia, following talks late June involving Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

This April, according to the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry, more than 270 military personnel were killed in the worst breach of a 1994 treaty between the sides.

Three UN Security Council Resolutions (853, 874 and 884), and United Nations General Assembly Resolutions 19/13 and 57/298 refer to Karabakh as being part of Azerbaijan.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe refers to the region as being occupied by Armenian forces.
