Azerbaijan intends to introduce China/Pakistan JF-17/FC-1 fighter

JF-17 fighters are getting better in the international market
The ongoing IDEAS2018 has good news. Pakistan is negotiating with Azerbaijan on the sale of JF-17 fighter jets. It is “close to reaching an agreement” and Azerbaijan is expected to become the fourth country to equip JF-17 fighters after Pakistan, Myanmar and Nigeria.
According to relevant reports, Azerbaijan's introduction of these JF-17 fighters will belong to the BLOCK2+ configuration, which means that its main system is equivalent to JF-17BLCOK2, but "there may be an airborne active phased array radar." in order to enhance the combat capability of fighters.
The Azerbaijan Air Force is equipped with MiG-29 fighters. Due to tensions with Russia, the Azerbaijan Air Force is not willing to continue to introduce Russian-made fighters.
According to overseas information, the Azerbaijan Air Force's existing equipment is mainly Russian-made fighters. The important combat aircraft include MIG-29 and MIG-21 fighters.
The MIG-29 fighters are second-hand aircraft imported from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. It was sent to Ukraine for overhaul, but the tactical technical indicators have lagged way behind. The Azerbaijan Air Force hopes to introduce new combat aircraft. Because of the tension between Azerbaijan and Russia, the Azerbaijan Air Force is not willing to continue to introduce Russian warplanes, but the price of Western combat aircraft is too high which is also a very big stimulus. In this case, the JF-17 fighter is the ideal choice for the Azerbaijan Air Force.
After the Azerbaijan Air Force is equipped with the JF-17 fighter, it will greatly enhance the Azerbaijan Air Force's combat capability. It has been said that the Azerbaijan Air Force's introduction of the JF-17 will be equipped with an airborne active phased array radar(The existing MiG-29 is equipped with a mechanical scan radar), so the JF-17 fighter's ability to detect distance, multi-target attack, multi-purpose, etc. far exceeds the MiG-29, and it has the upper hand in the look first shoot first Air Combat. In addition, the JF-17 can also be equipped with a photoelectric aiming pod and precise guidance bombs, gliding extended range guided bombs, anti-ship missiles, anti-radar missiles, etc., can detect, identify and strike ground (sea) targets under day and night conditions. These capabilities are also lacking in the MiG-29 fighters. It is said that the JF-17 fighter aircraft meets the requirements of establishing a capable and efficient air force in small and medium-sized countries such as Azerbaijan.
JF-17BLOCK2 emphasizes multi-purpose combat capabilities
Can carry heavy air-to-ground weapons to perform missions
After the JF-17 fighter jets were serviced by the Pakistan Air Force, the road to open up the international market was not that smooth. In addition to political reasons, the performance of the JF-17 fighters also had many shortcomings. The potential market for JF-17 fighters was mostly small and medium-sized countries. JF-17 fighters are best to meet the demands of users who require to have a strong multi-purpose combat capability to reduce the size of the air force equipment and costs. However, the early models of the JF-17 fighter aircraft still have many shortcomings in multi-purpose combat capability, which weakens its competitiveness.
Therefore, China Chengfei and the Pakistan Air Force began to emphasize the expansion of aircraft multi-purpose combat capability from the JF-17BLOCK2 fighter. The Pakistani side required the JF-17BLOCK2 fighter aircraft to have air refueling capability to improve aircraft load/voyage performance, especially under the condition of heavy air-to-ground weapons. It is still able to maintain a certain combat radius. In addition, the Pakistani side also requires the JF-17 to be able to mount 2,000-pound air-ground weapons, including bombs, air-to-ground missiles, stealth and anti-regional ammunition dispensers, etc., so China Chengfei and Pakistan are closely cooperating. The JF-17 isequipped with aerial refueling probes, modified new pylons, and carried out heavy-duty flight tests. Through these improvements, the JF-17 multi-purpose combat capability is effectively improved and the aircraft's competitiveness in the international market is largely enhanced.
Azerbaijan Air Force requires JF-17 to be equipped with airborne active phased array radar
It is also very important that relevant Chinese authorities have approved a series of new systems and equipment exports, including airborne active phased array fire control radar, new data link/communication system, and JF-17 fighter aircraft is with onboard active phase control. After the fire control radar and the new data link/communication system properly installed, the overall combat capability has taken a big step forward, thus laying a solid foundation for JF-17 to continuously acquire customers.
