Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) fleet of 24 F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft have achieved Final Operational Capability (FOC).
This is a major milestone for the Super Hornet fleet and is a major step forward for Australia’s Air Combat Capability
The Super Hornet fleet enhances Australia’s Air Combat Capability and ensures Australia’s Air Combat Capability regional edge is maintained until the introduction into service of the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter.
FOC is declared when the entire capability can be deployed on Defence operations. FOC takes into account not only the aircraft itself but also logistics, management, sustainment, facilities and training.
The Super Hornet is built by Boeing at its production line in St Louis, Missouri and has been flown by the United States Navy since 2001.
The Super Hornet gives the RAAF the capability to conduct air-to-air combat, strike targets on land and at sea, suppress enemy air defences and conduct reconnaissance.
The Super Hornets have been delivered on budget and ahead of schedule because of the teamwork of the manufacturer Boeing, the US Navy, the RAAF and the Defence Materiel Organisation.
The RAAF Base Amberley F/A-18F Super Hornets also form the basis for the transition to an EA-18G Growler capability later this decade.
Growler is an electronic warfare system that gives the Super Hornet the ability to jam the electronics systems of aircraft and land-based radars and communications systems. The Growler electronic warfare aircraft was used very effectively by the US Navy during air operations in Libya last year.
In 2009, the Government made the decision to wire 12 Super Hornets for potential conversion to the Growler configuration at a cost of $35 million.
In May this year the Government announced more than $19 million would be spent to purchase long lead item electronic equipment for the potential conversion of 12 of Australia’s F-18 Super Hornet’s to the EA-18G Growler variant.
In August, the Government announced that it would acquire the Growler electronic warfare system at an estimated cost of around $1.5 billion, including funding to acquire the Growler conversion kits, supporting equipment and systems, spares and training and initial training systems.

It will be a costly mistake on part of Australia to create animosity against China on behest of US because both Australia-China have excellent economic ties non wants to lose it.

I don't think the Aussies have any reason or intention to unnecessarily antagonize China.

Besides, every country should have a deterrent. Especially for a large country like Australia. And given that, their military is pretty small compared to the other "big boys" of NATO.

Everybody will eventually realize that Carlo Kopp is nothing more than a biased fraud.

All those are scenerios. An actual war between well BVR equipped airforces yet to happen and will lay down some future laws of air combat.

True, but even scenario's need moderation.. after all.. A scenario where the US simply rolls over a rogue military without inflicting any collateral casualties is usually portrayed well in the Media...but 8000 civilians and probably more provide a different picture.
Kopp is extremely prejudiced because he lost a multi-million dollar deal to upgrade the RAAF F-111Gs and was eventually sidelined and ridiculed. Since then he has taken on a mission to completely discredit the Australian armed forces and their equipment along with all possible purchases they can make(since Australia cannot purchase the F-22 and since it is the only fighter he cannot get the flanker variants to win against no matter how much he blows up their capabilities.. he leaves that).
Which is why I doubt his figures at any given day.. and doubt any arguments given by people quoting him.

Australia need F-18E/F to fill the gap between F-111 which has already retired and F-35A which is due to arrive from 2014 to 2018

Without the FA/18 E/F Super Hornet, our airspace will be wide open as there are not enough fighter/bomber squadron to claim the sky of Australia. Do bear in mind Australia is a very big country, almost the same size with the USA, we don't have a very big military, only a big airforce with 100 Plus fighter and other aircraft to look over the skies

We do not have enemy to anyone in the regions and we have treaty with everyone. Hence we only operate a small defense force instead of a standing military.

Another thing about Carlo Kopps is, he is a jerk and he is only a Pseudo-Expert on aviation. Basically he know jack shxt about military aviation, if you look at his background, he is trained as a computer sciencist. I think he got a PhD in some programing language, that's all. He only fly in F-18, F-111 flight-sim and he claim he is entitled to comment on the Military Aviation.

If he is an aviation expert then my Private Pilot license will make me a Ace Fighter Pilot.....

He just plain mad because people in Australia don't really listen to him when he demand the Aust Government to choose F-22 instead of F-35. Nobody in Australia think he is an expert of anything, maybe to computer science.

No one is our enemy. Doesn't mean we shouldn't have a military.

I think you need to focus more on naval aviation arm rather than a full blown air force. Being an island country, you guys need carriers more than land based fighters as that would extend your reach and enable your navy to ensure better safety in the IOR region along with other key stakeholders.

Has the Australian government considered acquiring a 30K ton class carrier?
