Australia have pulled out of the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh starting on January 27 due to security concerns. CA chief executive James Sutherland said the decision was taken after advice from the government stated that the threat to Australian interests in Bangladesh was as high as when the senior team had pulled out of their tour in October last year.

"For some time we have been working closely with ICC security advisors and monitoring the security situation in Bangladesh and have been keeping our players, officials and the players' parents as up to date as possible," Sutherland said. "Regrettably, the advice from our Government suggests that the security threat to Australians travelling to Bangladesh remains as high now as it was when we postponed the Test team's tour of that country late last year.

"Included in that is reliable information suggesting there is a high threat to Australian interests in Bangladesh and the knowledge that the Australian Government has authorised the dependants of posted diplomatic staff in Bangladesh to return home to Australia. In the end, with all of the information and advice we have received, we feel we had no alternative other than to make this difficult decision."

The BCB told ESPNcricinfo that it had cooperated fully with the ICC regarding security for the event, but the final decision to visit lay with individual countries. "We have given a strong security plan to the ICC and took into consideration everything it asked us to do," Jalal Yunus, the BCB's head of media, said. "Whether a member nation decides on coming to Bangladesh or not, is up to them."

Sutherland said CA had not taken the decision lightly and apologised to the ICC and BCB for inconvenience caused by the late withdrawal. "In advising the BCB, we have reaffirmed our desire to get back to Bangladesh to play cricket as soon as possible and will continue to discuss this with them in the coming months," he said. "We also know that this is a very disappointing outcome for our young players, who will have been looking forward to this event with great anticipation."

Australia were in Group D of the Under-19 World Cup along with India, Nepal and New Zealand.

Preparations for ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Bangladesh 2016 to continue

David Richardson says the ICC takes its responsibilities around the safety and security of ICC events extremely seriously; confident that the proposed security arrangements will adequately address the identified risks

·Both the ICC’s internal and independent security assessments have indicated that the security environment and the proposed security plans mean that it remains appropriate for the event to go ahead

·ICC invites Ireland to replace Australia in the event, which is scheduled to run from 27 January to 14 February

The International Cricket Council today said it will continue to prepare for this month’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh despite Australia withdrawing its team from the event and expressing its concerns about the safety and security of its squad and management.

The ICC explained that its own security manager and an independent security agency had been working very closely with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Bangladesh security agencies, and that the planned security arrangements satisfactorily mitigate the risks identified such that it remains appropriate for the event to continue as planned.

The ICC further announced that it has invited Ireland, as the runner-up in the qualifying event in Kuala Lumpur in October, to replace Australia in the 19-day tournament.

“Whilst the ICC notes and respects the position of Cricket Australia, which we understand is based on advice received from the Australian Government, we are obviously disappointed with the decision.

“The ICC takes its responsibilities around the safety and security of ICC events extremely seriously. And taking into consideration the full and unequivocal support of the Bangladesh government that has been afforded to us at the highest level and through all local security agencies, the advice we have received from our own and independent security experts, and the robust security plan that has been developed, the ICC remains of the view the it is appropriate for event planning to continue as scheduled,” ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said.

“Naturally, as part of that planning process, the ICC’s own security team, supported by an independent security agency, will continue to monitor closely the situation in Bangladesh, including all travel advisories provided by relevant government agencies.

“Security plans associated with an event of this size and stature are always subject to continual review to ensure that they remain appropriate and fit for purpose, and this event is no different.

“The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is an extremely important event on the ICC calendar, which has a reputation of producing international stars. We remain confident that the ICC, in conjunction with the BCB, will be able to successfully deliver this event in Bangladesh,” Mr Richardson concluded.

In your face Aussies LMAO

.
I think its a very harsh decision. Aussies should have known that last year South Africa, India and many other teams came to Bangladesh and played without any fear..

A very sad decision.. I think they have over reacted..

it was more of Aussie govt. decision rather than CA

But then if its not safe as per Australian government then why world over all teams are participating without fear?

Or they are afraid of Losing to other teams so thought better pull out and preserve records?

i have no idea, even ICC is giving guarantee.

Bangladesh security has probably sanitized the entire area 24/7...and its not like players are going to be touring beyond the stadium and hotel (and if they are they will probably be escorted by half of Bangladesh military).

Strange decision. Was the initial security warning from Aus Govt (that is still in effect and used as excuse for this) given in response to the blogger hacking or was it something else?

Terribly disappointed
You think BCB will take it up strongly with ICC?
May be Gov of BD with Gov of Australia and assure them?
Or perhaps with Aus Ambassador to BD?

That can be a good move and try to assure them.. BD is pretty safe when it comes to cricket..

If some one and some ppl hurt cricketers, i think BD fans will kill them outright there only even if the hostiles are armed..

I think fans will miss some good action bcz of a stupid decision..

You think the racist aussies need a reasonable excuse to slap around a smaller (cricketing) country some way? If India was also size of Bangladesh, no doubt they would do same thing.....but it isn't and they cannot risk burning their pay check so badly.

Bangladesh should boycott anything held in Australia as well (in my opinion)....Australia is after all a racist insecure place that has even seen terrorist attacks not so long ago.

I was looking forward to seeing India - Aus clashes....now its just going to be NZ that we will be sparring with seriously in our group.

I am sure the entire event will go without any problem and Aussies will look the fools at the end of it. Serves them right.

Bangladesh should make a memorial to Aboriginal peoples right outside Australian High commission.

What was it before and what is it now?

Normally the standard is 23 kg internationally (checked in)....I remember the days when it was 32 kg and even more.

Bangladesh can actually take such issues to court since the ICAO defines very clearly what a country's minimum requirements and boundaries are regarding legal aviation issues.
