The Australian Department of Defence's (DoD's) scientific research organisation, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), announced on 10 February that it had signed a collaborative research agreement with IBM Australia.

Chief Defence Scientist Dr Alex Zelinsky said the agreement covers research areas including cyber security, analytics, and cognitive computing.

A DoD spokesperson told IHS Jane's that senior management and researchers from DSTO and IBM will identify candidate collaborative projects in the coming months, with work set to commence later in the year once approvals have been secured.

The spokesperson added that the agreement was signed as a result of DSTO's five-year strategic plan, released in April 2013, which identified cyber security as one of three priority areas for the organisation's research and development (R&D) efforts.
