Australia, India take first steps on nuclear deal | The Nation

NEW DELHI - Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday agreed to open negotiations to export uranium nuclear fuel to energy-hungry India after meeting her counterpart Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.

The deal, which will provide a boost for India’s civilian nuclear ambitions, comes after Australia reversed its policy of refusing to sell uranium to India as it has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh welcomed the decision of the Australian government on uranium sales to India, noting that nuclear energy will play an important role in India’s future energy needs,” a joint statement said.

“India and Australia (will) commence negotiations on a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement which, for Australia, is a prerequisite for uranium sales to other countries,” it added.

Gillard overcame opposition within her own Labour party to reverse the ban last year, arguing that the deal was necessary to improve ties with one of Asia’s biggest economies.

The two countries will now kick off formal discussions, but have warned that negotiations are likely to last up to two years. New Delhi - backed by the US - won a special exemption in 2008 from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which governs global nuclear trade, to allow it to buy reactors and fuel from overseas.

India, which has fractious relations with its nuclear-armed neighbour Pakistan, had been subject to a global embargo since 1974 when it first conducted a nuclear weapons test. Singh hailed Wednesday’s announcement as recognition of India’s ‘record and credentials’ on civil nuclear power and expressed his appreciation to Australia.

Gillard said the proposed sale of uranium was ‘personally important’ to her as she had led the campaign for a change in Australian policy - attracting fierce criticism from some environmentalists and anti-nuclear groups.

Gillard earlier said that negotiations would guarantee that the uranium would be used only for peaceful purposes and in safe conditions, and that the deal would be overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

New Delhi has sought to forge close ties with a host of countries with deposits of uranium, including Mongolia, Namibia and Tajikistan alongside Kazakhstan and Canada.

India is heavily dependent on coal and produces less than three percent of its energy from its existing atomic plants. The government hopes to raise the figure to 25 percent by 2050.

Although Australia does not use nuclear power itself, it is the world’s third-ranking uranium producer and holds an estimated 23 percent of the world’s reserves.

On Wednesday morning, Gillard attracted widespread press attention when she fell to the ground in front of TV cameras after the heel of her shoe became stuck in grass at a memorial park to Mahatma Gandhi.

She was unhurt and laughed off the incident.

Besides diplomacy whose role cannot by appreciated any less, its also a question of demand & supply.

India is among the few ' legitimate' buyers with the cash to pay.

The world needs us possibly more than we need them or realise.

In a free market economy you cant really say no to a country like India for a long time. Yes you are right they need Asia but I think we need them too. We have money they have resources. Current Australian economy if is booming in crisis is because of Chinese investment in resources which are over 100 billion in last decade. Now India i stepping up the throttle. Adani group's 12 bill investment in port and coal terminal is a good enough reason for Australia to recogonize India as the next energy hungry nation who can bring more prosperity for Aussies.

No. Australia didn't "Fall down" and "accept Indian demands"

I don't know why you are trying to make the deal sound like it was done by force.

The fact is the deal was made because both countries made comprises which allowed a deal to be created.

Both countries will be gaining out of the deal, it isn't one sided.

Fell down, what kind of statement is this?!
Were we holding hostages or something?

That's what he makes it sound like :disagree:

He makes it sound like India invaded Australia and said "IF YOU DON'T SELL US URANIUM, YOU WILL BE CONQUERED!!!" :cheesy:

China's appetite for uranium is drying up, that is one of the reasons the Australian government decided to start selling to India.

der aye durust aye...

We always knew the deal would come...may be a little late..but goods news nevertheless.
Thank you australia

That`s surprising to hear. Did they discovered more mines in China or Africa where they have been investing?

this part is not true. China's appetute for urannium is increasing every years.
but the international Uranium price is increasing too fast......
from 2010 to 2020 we will consume 90 thousand tons of uranium ore.
We have to do everything to get "cheap" uranium.
the australia *urannium is too expensive.
and I dont really understand why india want to buy australia urannium, it is not cheap....
uranium ore is not nuclear warhead, you can buy it everywhere.

unfortunatly all of our domestic uranium mine are far far away. the biggst chinese uranium mine is in Erdos in Inner Mongolia. and in xingjiang near Kazakhstan. mine and refine our domestic resource is still too expensive. we have to try find more domestic uranium mine and reduce the refine cost. and try to get more cheaper urannium from kazahhstan or africa. .
and invest more money to develop nuclear fusion technologie..

.
at the end of the day it all comes down to economics !! Australia is selling since we are ready to pay !! as simple as that @@
