But it was only last year that an Indian defence minister visited Australia, the first since Indian independence.
A leading thinker on the topic, Raja Mohan says Australia is one of India's most significant bilateral partnerships, made more important by the rise of China and regional uncertainty.
Dr Mohan a non-resident Lowy Institute Fellow, is in Sydney for the annual Australia-India Roundtable.
