Australia and New Zealand warned China on Tuesday against building any military base in the South Pacific, following media reports that the Chinese have proposed a permanent stronghold in Vanuatu.

Fairfax Media reported that China had approached the former French colony about building a permanent military presence in the South Pacific.

China and Vanuatu denied the reports. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Vanuatu also assured his government that "no such request has been made" by China.

"We would view with great concern the establishment of any foreign military bases in those Pacific island countries and neighbors of ours," Turnbull told reporters.

New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern said her country takes "a strong position in the Pacific against militarization."

Vanuatu government spokesman Hilaire Bule said there were no plans to host a Chinese base in his nation of 280,000 people, which has received large sums of infrastructure finance from China in recent years.

"There are no such discussions regarding a military base in Vanuatu," Bule said.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman dismissed the report as "fake news" and referred reporters to Vanuatu's denial.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner, while the United States is Australia's most important defense ally.

Australia has a growing U.S. Marine Corps presence in the northern city of Darwin as part of the U.S. military pivot toward Asia. Darwin is not defined as a U.S. military base because the troops are not permanently stationed there and leave during the southern summer months.

Good news we don't issue many warnings so this is serious now, we aren't dogs like China who just keep barking.

Why there is so much pain when USA & UK have military bases around the world...so China can also have a few...

It is called Western privilege. They started looting and colonizing nations around the world. They still believe they are the righteous heirs of their bounty nations.

NZ oppose to ANY militarization in South Pacific, last time US ask NZ to host a Temporary Naval Base, NZ also said no. And that is the reason why NZ withdraw from ANZUS pack because they literally don't want any country building any bases in South Pacific.

Australia also oppose to US base back in 90s and 00s and only allow 1 single US Marine rotation in NT recently.

US and UK have minimal present in South Pacific as oppose to Northern Pacific (which literally litter with US Base in Marianas, Japan and Korea) or Indian Oceans (Diego Garcia, Gulf of Eden). There are only 2 US military installation in South Pacific, both in Australia, one in NT and one in Adelaide.

And we want to keep it that way

Then New Zealand'a opposition makes sense and I respect their principled stance.

That's bigoted..If USA has military basis so should China or any other country.. Simple.

lol, that show you know jack shit about ozzie and kiwis....

if you compare which continent has the minimum number of US installation, that have to be in Oceania.

We (Speaking as an Australia) like South Pacific the way it is, we don't want any more base in the region. 2 is more than enough.

LOL You talk about the two US installations in Oceania as if that is some sort of achievement.

You are still owned by the US. The numbers don't matter.

It is funny how you throw fits about China having a base. Well, guess what. It is not you who will make that decision.

Who's being bigoted? ANZ or the American?.

In an American perspective, a Chinese base all the way in Vanuatu is not a big deal, because it is too far for China to support and it went pass way too many US friendly nation before they can connect between the base in Mainland China. The same goes the Chinese base in gulf of Eden. A base is only good if you can maintain and support its forward operation. The US see how Japan invade and capture US frontier territories in the Pacific (Philippines, Marianas, Marshalls and so on) and for the US, unless there is a way to support a base in forward position, its going to do more harm than good for the general defence strategy.

For the American, I don't see or think how they will oppose such move, maybe if China want to build a base in Singapore or Philippines, then it may be more "soild" than one in Vanuatu. There are no way China can support a base that far south from its mainland if and when war broke out.

In an Australian/New Zealand perspective, a more militarization in South Pacific would mean an increase of defence budget, changing of government priority, currently due to the peacefulness in the region, both ANZ did not spend much on defence (The whole RAN only have 8 Destroyers/Frigate and 14 patrol boat. New Zealand Navy is even worse, only 2 frigate and a handful of patrol boat). If countries (ANY COUTNRIES) start militarizing South Pacific, then both Australia and New Zealand will need to dedicate more resource into defence than it needed to.

That is the reason why there are virtually no foreign military installation in South Pacific, apart from what have been done since WW2. WE (Both Australia and NZ) said no to many proposed US Military installation in the area, that is because we don't want Southern Ocean to be in an armed race, so we will most likely and equally say no to other foreign power, be it China, India, or even Japan to have foreign installation in the region.

HOW. DO. WE. OWNED. BY. THE. US?

Just because you said so? LOL. Have you EVER ACTUALLY SET FOOT IN AU/NZ?

And if you think Australia and New Zealand have ZERO influence to Vanuatu, that is a big mistake mate. We held more card than China if we are to talk about Fiji and Vanuatu. People like you will NEVER understand international politic.

Neither of them.... in this case, it is Australia

The US base in Australia are relic from WW2. There are only 2 bases, Pine Gap in NT (Open in 1960s) and An mothballed airfield in SA (I don't know where) that were from WW2 and still with a least agreement to host USAF personnel/aircraft if the US wanted, an option have not been use since 1980s. That base was used to interdict Eastern Indian Ocean back in WW2 (Along with Fremantle Naval base)

We disapprove bases, but we will still honour agreement made prior.

LOL The whole bloody world knows that New Zealand and Australia are like the left and right testicles of the US. In one word: INSEPARABLE.

The US, New Zealand and Australia are the staunchest of staunchest allies.

LOL You mean the same indigenous people of Fiji and Vanuatu that got exterminated by outsiders that today claim to be their allies?

I thought Canada and UK weer the left and right testicle, if Australia and New Zealand were left and right testicle then what are Canada and UK? Pakistan is more "Staunchest" allies of the US than Australia and New Zealand will ever be.

LOL you have absolutely no clue how AU/NZ can and did interfere with Fiji and Vanuatu internal affair.

Again, do some research before opening your mouth, you will only embarrass yourself if you don't.

This isn't your game Aussie... Behave yourself or one day we will ship all of you back to England where your criminal ancestors came from:-)

yeah, yeah, yeah

You will need to ask my mate Roger the Kangaroo.

Come down and spank us and see how far you can get.

LOL you tell me to research, but go on to claim that Pakistan is an ally of the US LMAO Even an ant knows that both are enemies.

Bro, it is better for you not to pretend like the world is deaf, dumb and blind. We know what goes on. Just because you live on the other side doesn't mean we don't know what is happening.

Just let Vanuatu decide its own matters. They don't need dictation from Australia and New Zealand.
