Attack on Hamid Mir: Geo TV declares war on ISI

Hamid Mir, an anchorperson for GeoTV and known for ISI-bashing, was attacked in Karachi Saturday evening. The attack apparently was not intended to kill him as he received bullets in his legs and abdomen. He was rushed to hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger. Mir and his media group, known for soft corner for Pakistan’s archrival India, had recently come under criticism through social media for deliberately weakening Pakistan’s security establishment. It was also alleged that the channel has received huge funding from India to promote India’s soft image in Pakistan. A media commission set up under a retired top judge found the allegations from media watch dog, PEMRA, to be plausible. However, these allegations were hushed up in the top court when Justice Iftikhar Chaudhari then presiding the court and generally perceived to be friendly with the media group, pressured PEMRA to backtrack.

Recently, due to its monotonous campaign against army and ISI, ratings of Geo News and Mir's show, Capital Talk, were sliding. This attack and the way it is being spinned might bring the channel back into booming business.

Although, the attack apparently was not intended to kill him as is evident from the fact that not a single bullet hit his head or chest, the media group has declared a war on Pakistan Army and ISI, the premier intelligence agency and alleged that Mir could have been attacked by ISI. Not only that, referring to a statement of Mir, the media group alleged that ISI chief Gen Abbasi was behind the attack.

ISI is not only the top-most intelligence agency, it is also a powerful security outfit and directly implicating ISI in a “murder” attempt is being considered outrageous by various analysts. This allegation was made soon after the attack was reported.

It may be interesting to know that Indian media has suddenly become upbeat and giving huge coverage to this allegation. On the other hand, ISPR which is a PR wing of army has not only condemned the attack, it has also condemned the allegation.

Pakistan Army is fighting a deadly battle against terrorists in Pakistan’s restive tribal belt and has lost more than 5,000 soldiers to that war. In such circumstances, implicating its ISI for a failed murder attempt is quite interesting and has baffled the media gurus and security analysts.

Currently, terrorists of TTP and India RAW also blame ISI for anything going wrong against their interests.

Hamid Mir attack: 'Baseless' allegations against ISI chief regrettable

ISLAMABAD: Condemning the attack on Hamid Mir, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that raising allegations against the ISI or the head of the ISI without any basis was highly regrettable and misleading.

The statement from the ISPR came in response to allegations that the ISI was directly behind the attack on the journalist. The ISPR spokesman on Saturday prayed for Mir's "well being and quick recovery", and said that an independent inquiry must immediately be carried out to ascertain facts.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also reiterated that a detailed inquiry would be launched into the incident to trace the culprits. The minister said that the government would ensure foolproof protection to journalists facing security threats.

Earlier, while talking, Khawaja Asif said the government was "determined to find out the truth". "This is a very sad incident that should be condemned in every possible manner." Hamid Mir's family members and employers are pointing fingers at the ISI for having a direct hand in the attack. When asked about the accusations, Asif said nothing could be said without proper investigation.

"This is a very serious allegation and I hope this is not true. Nothing can be said without a detailed inquiry. Such a serious allegation on the army's intelligence arm demands detailed and thorough probe," he said.

Earlier,Senior journalist Amir Mir, brother of Hamid Mir, has said that the Geo News senior anchorperson had said that if he was attacked the Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam and some of its other officials would be responsible.

Speaking to Geo News on Saturday, Amir Mir said the senior anchorperson had informed him of a plan by the ISI chief Lt Gen Zaheer-ul-Islam to assassinate him.

Geo News reported that Hamid Mir had also sent a recorded video to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) implicating the ISI in any attempt on his life. Besides the Jang Group management, Hamid Mir had also shared his statement about his possible attackers with a few armymen and others.

Islamabad: It was a shameful conduct of Capital Talk Show by Geo Television on the night of April 19 over the issue of attack on its top anchor Hamid Mir when journalists sitting in this Talk Show were trying to bail out those who are blamed by Hamid Mir family for attacking him. Geo anchor of Khabarnak Aftab Iqbal was saying that allegation of Hamd Mir family chief of top Pakistani intelligence agency ISI involved in attacking was actually an act of panic and reaction of his family and there are possibilities that allegations were unfounded and baseless. While anchor of the show Saleem Safi was discussing that Pakistani media was crossing its limits and was becoming spokesman of different powers. He was trying to say that Hamid Mir was crossing his limits and that is the reason he was attacked and he was also trying to bail ISI out from allegations leveled by younger brother of Hamid Mir that his brother was attacked on the orders of the Chief of the ISI.

It was good to hear that Geo anchor person Iftikhar Ahmed who had a different stance than the Aftab Iqbal and Saleem Safi and categorically said that Hamid Mir informed about his fears to everybody including him and Saleem Safi that his life was in danger and named those people who are blamed by his family today after this attack. Bureau Chief of Geo Islamabad Rana Jawad also supported the stance of family of Hamid Mir and said allegations were not outcome of panic of his family but these fears were expressed by Hamid Mr himself before this attack.

Television anchor Asma Sherazi of Dawn had a bold stance and was of the view that media houses should forget their differences and should join hands to fight against terrorism journalists are facing.

I support the stand and statement of ISPR. This is highly regretted that for a small incident of terrorism the whole institution has been implicated at a premature stage. This shows the panic of the family and media persons. One who feels guilty, starts crying before the results. We can say (Chor ki Darhi mein Tinka).
The Geo is affiliated with CNN. The CNN controlling 96 % media centres all over the world and propagating the policies of stake holders according to their own perceptions. Hamid Mir, was black mailed at the hands of CIA on the issue of Osama. Once the BBC Tv ran a campaing for the arrest of Hamid Mir because of his writing book on OSama and having photographs with Osama. The preparations were made for his arrest. But suddenly the instance was changed and Hamid Mir who took stand in the interest of country on manny occasions had changed himself and started following the guidelines provided by the enemy agencies. He started maligning the ISI and propagating AMAN KI ASHAA. AT this point of time when negotiations with taliban are underway and situation in Baluchistan is highly volatile, such an attack on Hamid Mir would be a conspiracy to malign the ISI and institution for paving a way of world wide campaign through international media. The on going victory of Abdullah Abdullah in Afghanistan, the agreement of Aghan India and Iran (2015 -2025) shall affect the foreign policy around Pakistan especially for Army. It seems to be a plan against the ISI. In the near future when we would be in dire need of media support against the false dessimination, our own media shall go against us and shall be in control of CNN and stake holders. There shall be a difficult time ahead. In my opinion the clarification of ISPR is premature. ISI may become part of investigation team, depute some officers to join investigation team and bring the terrorist and the designer of this attack to justice. To say, he is anti-Pakistani is not enough. The world is a small place. We Pakistanis know each other, the way we think. Hamid Mir started his career from Lahore as a journalist. What exactly does he want to achieve through his work and efforts? What motivates him? He eats and lives like any other Pakistani.
