PESHAWAR: At least 12 terrorists were killed on Wednesday, during an operation in North Waziristan Agency's Datakhel district.

According to the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), four terrorist hideouts were destroyed through aerial strikes by gunship helicopters. Seven vehicles were also destroyed during the operation.

End of last year, conflicting reports suggested that air strikes conducted in Datakhel had killed key commanders of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group.

The dead were reported to include Gul Bahadur, Sadiq Noor and Akhtar Muhammad along with 30 other militants of the group. Some sources said that at least seven key commanders of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group have died in the strikes.

The Pakistan Army launched a comprehensive operation in 2014, against foreign and local terrorists who were hiding in sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal region, a week after the brazen insurgent attack on the country's busiest airport in Karachi.

The tribal region, which borders with Afghanistan, has been used as a base by militants over the years. According to the ISPR, troops have been deployed along its border with neighbouring agencies to block any movement of terrorists in and out of the region.

That is a tactical retreat. They will come back. Solution lies in peace and reconciliation.
