You know how it ended.

USSR dissolved because it was multi ethnic. Afghanistan was USSR's war, not Russia's war. Russia is uni ethnic and therefore cannot dissolve into ethnic republics. Syria war cannot end like Afghanistan war.

I had this hunch too, perhaps his motive is to 'expose' the dark side of the asad regime by pretending to be a loyal supporter. The way he uses dynasty to describe the asad regime is an indication of his 'noble' motive.
