Gilchrist calls Warne's successor
Ravi Ashwin's dismissal of Hashim Amla last night prompted legendary Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to call it the 'T20 ball of the century'.
Handed the ball by captain MS Dhoni in the sixth over, Ashwin began around the wicket with a carrom ball down the leg-side, a nondescript prelude of what was to come.
Ashwin went with the carrom ball again, this time landing the finger-flicked delivery outside Amla's leg-stump, wrong-footing the batsman as it viciously spun and bounced pass the clueless defensive prod on its way into the top of off-stump.
It was the modern-day version of Shane Warne's 'Gatting Ball', the delivery that changed the blonde leg-spinners life for ever.
Warne's first ball in England left the Spin King's hand with fizz and flight, drifting in the air to pitch well outside leg, ripping back and beating Mike Gatting's forward defense to take the top of off.
Over the past 21 years the legend of that delivery has grown into cricket folklore. Will Ashwin's carry its own story in years to come?
