In his speech on the occasion of anniversary of 9/11 attacks, al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has called upon his followers to attack the US and bleed and cripple its economy. As if they were acting on his advice, the Taliban militants staged a suicide car bombing and then engaged in a gunfight with security forces near the American consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat early Friday leaving behind eight corpses including five of the attackers. The consulate staff remained un-hurt.
The Taliban have accepted the responsibility for the attack.
The attack has exposed the fragility of the security situation in Afghanistan, when the Americans have decided to withdraw all their troops by the next year. According to the details released by Afghan Tolo TV network, the attack began around 6 am with the powerful blast. The car bomber detonated his explosives around 60 meters (66 yards) away from the consulate compound. Other militants then began firing on security forces in the area. Footage showed Afghan police dragging away a badly bloodied person from the scene — it was unclear if he was dead or who he was. Rubble and twisted pieces of metal lay strewn in a seemingly wide area near the consulate, the footage showed.
Herat lies near Afghanistan's border with Iran and is considered one of the better developed cities in the country, with a strong Iranian influence. The US consulate is located in a relatively sparsely populated part of the city.
On the other hand, al Qaeda chief called Thursday for attacks on the United States and a boycott of the world's largest economy. His speech was posted on ****** forums a day after America held ceremonies in honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001. He asked his followers to bleed America economically by provoking it to continue in its massive expenditure on its security, for the weak point of America is its economy, which has already begun to stagger due to the military and security expenditure.
This message of al Qaeda chief strengthens the perception that 9/11 attacks were planned to pull the US into fighting a long war in Afghanistan to bleed its economy the way Americans engaged former USSR in Afghanistan. The Soviet economy bled in the previous Afghan Jihad leading to disintegration of USSR. Osama bin Laden’s plans to lay a trap for the US through 9/11 attacks were based on the Soviet example.
