Army high command, not Bhutto, responsible for 1971 East Pak fiasco, says d

1971 debacle was the fault of our ruling elite of the time

There is no one bad guy. All are guilty but instead of all accepting blame they all point fingers at each other. Bhutto covered up the report because it included him as guilty. So while he appeared to be covering up for the military he was also protecting himself.

Army high command, not Bhutto, responsible for 1971 East Pak fiasco, says daughter

Islamabad, May 20(ANI): Former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s daughter Sanam, who lives in London and stays away from Pakistani politics, has issued a statement asserting that the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report had exonerated her father of the 1971 East Pakistan fiasco, and lay the blame squarely on the army high command under General Yahya Khan.

“Analyzing and probing the probable lapses of Pakistan Army during the East Pakistan debacle of 1971, the Hamoodur Rahman Commission did reportedly come up with a lot of intriguing and explosive facts, but its report remains a black hole,” a 16 May report of The News had said.

”Apart from fixing responsibilities on key Army officials, the top arbiter of his time had also blamed the then Premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for the East Pakistan fiasco. However, as was expected of him, Bhutto had gone on to accuse the Enquiry Commission of exceeding its jurisdiction,” the report added.

“This is a complete travesty. Anyone who has read the report will testify to the fact that the report exonerates my father but lays the blame squarely on the army high command under General Yahya.

The fact is that the officers and men of the Pakistan Army were completely demoralised and devastated and, in order to rebuild their morale and honour, my father not only stopped the report’s publication but also put a ban on all media diatribe and propaganda against the armed forces,” Sanam said in a statement, which was sent to The News through her friend based in Islamabad.

“My father worked day and night to rebuild a broken country from the ashes of defeat and to restore the image and honour of the Pakistan Armed Forces. His reward was the gallows!” she added.

Sanam launched a strong attack on Bhutto-haters who, she said, continue to malign her father even so many years after his death.

“They thought that they had buried Bhutto for good, but cannot accept that Bhutto lives in the hearts and souls of even a brand new generation, which never laid eyes on him,” she said.

“The truth is that my father rules this nation from his grave and his enemies are unable to fathom the mystery of his legend. My father gave his life for his country but refused to barter its sovereignty and that is why despite the calumny he stands so tall,” she added.

Sure. It was General niazi who raised the slogan

ادھر ہم ادھر تم

And kidnapped Mujeeb and locked him up in Mianwali prison.
Obviously Bhutto did all that.

I have said it before and I will say it again. When is the army high command presenting itself for accountibility for the shit they have done over 70 years?

Bhutto was calling the shots. Which guys made up the army high command at that time ? Disgraced YAHYA Khan himself was a Soviet stooge along with Bhutto and most other senior staffs. Yahya even visited Moscow in 1970 for Soviet aids. United States and China didn't like this double game by Bhutto and Co. Therefore, they didn't come to help us against the Indo-Soviet axis.

True but that is akin to asking when is the Pakistani awam going present themselves for the shit they have achieved in 70 years. Did it occur to you we all as a society are responsible for the mess or otherwise Pakistan is in. Germany is a incredible country. Where do you think the credit goes to? Bantu Negroes? Siberian Eskimos? Or the German people?

I think the first step should be to ask the user making that claim to explain his position.

Yes, we respect Jinnah, but there are some leftists in Pakistan (and of course Indians and some Western scholars) that do criticize Jinnah.

Having these discussions should help others be more informed when they come across criticism of Jinnah by the aforementioned Pakistani leftists/Indians/Western Scholars.

I have high regard for Jinnah, least of all for escaping us from the clutches of Gangus. But he was mortal like all of us. He was not holy, ordained or a prophet. So it is reasonable in a free, open society or forum to be able to de-construct the events of the past. But then free thought and enquiry is a anathema to likes of you and the very cause of the malaise in Pakistan.

You could have chosen to ask me the reason why I included MA Jinnah but instead you went tangent.

Thank you for that clarification. Although the member did not ask but I will explain.

No nation can exist in two distinct geographies with over 1,000 miles of space occupied by a existenial threat namely India. People might mention UK vis-à-vis Gibralter, Falkland Islands or France vis-à-vis Martinique or Réunion. However those are tiny territories akin to being satellites of the mother country. Please see map below of metropolitan France and the tiny territories.

In this equation the mother country is so large in comparison to the territories that it's pull and shadow engulfs them. However in case of Pakistan the question would arise which was metropolitan [mother] and which region was territory? Bangla had greater population then West Pakistan. This is like the child try to be the father figure to the elder sibling. This would never work. It has never worked anywhere.

America split from Britain despite that colony being English settlers. Ditto Canada, Australia, New Zealand. What I am saying is that in 1947 it should have been very apparent that in the very DNA of the new country there was huge flaw which would bite at some point. As you are aware very soon Banglas began aggitating over Urdu even when Jinnah was alive. Rest is history.

How long civilians keep protecting the, land grabbing, power angry, and big budget army of its mistakes?

Have you resurrected a thread older than this one before? Or is this now the new record?

Civilian Mullah Politicians all have been to jail and have been accountable. The high command of army has never been held accountable for introducing militants , extremist ideas , looting , coups , martials laws and dha land scams.

Jinnah was smart man and was instrumental in the creation of Pakistan but frankly he was a nerdy lawyer what Pakistan needed at that time was a Stalinist like dictatorship to root out the feudal, and moulvi mess we suffer Military folks were just a byproduct of the British Tradition out of touch with the mass populace hende failure in trying to form a psuedo authoritarian state look at China in the 50s it was a Stalinist dictatorship before the Soviet split in the early 60s likewise I could say the same with Ataturk in Turkey during the 1920s and 1930s, anyways I kinda wished we had a tough as nails dude like them in the late 40s vs a bunch of lawyers to be frank

But you can't blame him. He died too soon.
