NEW DELHI: After defence minister A K Antony and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne, it's now the turn of Army chief General Bikram Singh to head for Myanmar to bolster bilateral defence cooperation ranging from better border management to "capacity- building" of the Myanmarese armed forces.

During his three-day visit beginning Tuesday, Gen Singh will hold talks with the top leadership of Myanmar as well as visit different defence establishments. India has steadily enhanced diplomatic, economic and military cooperation with Myanmar to counter China's deep strategic inroads
there.

The only Asean country with which India shares land and maritime boundaries, New Delhi has stepped up training and equipment supplies for the Myanmarese armed forces as part of the overall capacity-building plan. India, for instance, has created "more vacancies" for Myanmarese personnel at the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun and the counter-insurgency and jungle warfare school at Vairengte in Mizoram, among other military institutions.

The military hardware supplied to Myanmar ranges
from Islander maritime patrol aircraft and naval gun- boats to 105mm light artillery guns, mortars, grenade launchers and rifles. Myanmar is also getting some armaments and electronic equipment, including radars manufactured by Bharat Electronics Ltd, for its warships like frigates and corvettes.
