KARACHI: The army is acquiring thousands of kanals of land for four garrisons it has planned to set up in Swat – one each in Barikot, Kabal, Khwazakhela and Matta – bypassing the law and, in some instances, to the displeasure of local people, the Herald reports.

According to a report published in the magazine’s August issue, that hit the newsstands today (Friday), military officials appointed in Swat are heading negotiations with local land-owners for the acquisition of land.

This is in violation of the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, which states that only the civilian administration is authorised to acquire land for public purposes.

Some local people are also not happy with the land acquisition and the prices being offered. Sher Shah Khan, whose family will lose 4,000 kanals of land in Kabal to a cantonment, is one of them.

“We told the army that this is our source of livelihood but they said there was no possibility of the government acceding to our demand of not building a garrison in this area,” he said.

A known political figure of Matta, who wishes to remain anonymous, puts it this way: “Paying 73 rupees per square foot for fertile land of Swat is a joke being played on the Swati people. It is less than you pay for a square foot of an average quality carpet.”

IF the land is being sold for cheap whats the problem? Are they robbing it? No they are paying for it. How can the army ILLEAGALY occupy its own country. The army will need stragetic points to protect the civilians. Go on tell me whats better. The taliban taking the civilians money and possesions for free? or a better idea is to move and keep the possesions and wealth and just move?

QFE:

Before you bash about illeagal occupation read your own post. If after the sale the owner of the land is not happy then tough.

For this politican Tabliban were good who had taken lives without paying anything.

well i think if this land is of govt than it will be no probleum for army to take it because army is institution of govt

Complete political BS --

This is in violation of the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, which states that only the civilian administration is authorised to acquire land for public purposes.

The Pakistani state has only itself to blame, it has laws onthe books from 1894, laws intended for the English occupation -- I guess now, the legislature may be moved to do it's job.

Actually I saw the story in a Pakistani paper, just can'tr remember which one, maybe the News international - it's just political tamasha, a legal technicaliity being used for political purposes - shameless!

Those army garrisons will do more good then harm to the local populace . They will provide jobs to the local populace . I don't know about India but Army garrisons in Pakistan are like a city within a city . More shops will be set up , schools and hospitals might be built as well plus army will be close by incase of a natural disaster or security situation . Also new road and bridges might be constructed . All these to the benefit of local populace .

Ungrateful and thankless people who are protesting ...

I met such a character in Islamabad Hardee's back in Winter 2011 ... and this guy was moaning about his land being acquired by the PA in South Wazirastan area ... such Feudal lords should be eradicated imo ...

and the one in this news ... owner of 4000 kanals .. these vaderas are the ones on the receiving end and rightly so
