In order to become agile and lethal, 1.13 million strong Indian Army has significantly removed its night blindness as 70 per cent tanks can fight in the night. The Army has also cut down its mobilisation time by half from the days of Operation Parakram in the wake of the Parliament attack when it took almost 15 days to mobilise the forces close to the western border. Future targets include equipping each army corps with a rotary brigade for information gathering, quick response and supporting the attack helicopters. The rotary wing would also be speedy troop movement as a part of the combat support system.
“Army aviation wing was created so that commanders at tactical battlefield should not look beyond his back. IAF has its own views and we have ours,” Army Chief Gen V K Singh said. The two services are at loggerheads over the scope and mandate of the Army Aviation Wing with the Indian Air Force insisting that the Army should take all air support from them.
Singh said many acquisition projects are in the pipeline, which, if approved in the next two months, would lead to Rs 5,000 crore purchase for the Army in a fiscal. If only some of them are cleared, still the purchase would be close to Rs 2,500 crore. The new purchases are in air and ground surveillance, deeper strike capability, tactical decision support systems and to counter night-blindness.

70%, means around 3500+ tanks can fight at night..
Its really a good development by army..

Wow, very nice. This time last year it was something like 60% "night blind" what a turnaround. Good going IA!

we need to concentrate more in numbers than percentages to counter China. Great achievement by India . Hope IAF will make it 100% .

I don't buy that they must be only talking about elite strike corp.. :blah::blah:

What piss me off is that our military planners/leaders/babus are brained washed by successful propaganda campaign that there will be no full scale war or long duration war in the future.

It leads to a situation that we are only preparing for a small battle for short duration instead of both (small battle for short duration + full fledged war for longer period of time).

It was expected
Whatever Ajay Shukla says , but it was necessary to upgrade the T-72 Tanks @ 5 cr each ,
Since Gen Deepak Kapoor's Speech in 2008 saying that only 20 % of our MBTs were capable of night fighting
we have gone ahead and upgraded over 1200 T-72s , and inducted over 200 T-90 and 124 Arjun MK1

Currently we have 170 Arjun MK1 , 807 T-90 , 1950 T-72 , and 550 T-55 in service ie a total of 3477 MBTs out if which over 2200 are capable of Night Fighting

“A lot of changes have taken place since 2001; and in the next two years even more changes will take place. We have done studies and made a plan to speed up deployments. We will have some new cantonments, forward locations… and changes in the method of mobilisation. From Parakram, there are a lot of changes. What we did in 15 days, we now do in 7; and will do in 3 days in the future,” explained the chief

70% of tanks have NV? I doubt it. Not to long ago the army chief admitted only 20% of tank had NV... I think this is BS.

Current IA tanks are useless in the context of China because of the mountainous terrain.

We need to consolidate are artillery, transportation (including border infra./BRO) , first of all.

We need huge nos. of Brahmos and Prahaar's on the Himalayas.

Also need those M777s ....

Indeed. That's what I was thinking of when I mentioned 'artillery'.

we also need to strengthen our infantry soldiers with all the latest gadhetry and assault rifles.

Any F-Insas thrust must first focus on the Eastern Command infantry units.
