Arms purchase: Bangladesh is buying Turkey-made Bayraktar TB2 drone

The drone used by Ukraine in the war against Russia has put the Russian army in trouble, Bangladesh is buying the Bayraktar TB2 drone made by Turkey. Mostafa Osman Turan, the ambassador of Turkey in Dhaka, confirmed that Bangladesh has recently signed an agreement to buy this drone. He said that the Bangladesh Armed Forces recently signed an agreement with Bayker Technology, the manufacturer of the TB2 drone.

Earlier last year, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Turkey, Masoud Mannan, said in an interview to the country’s state news agency Anadolu, “The drones made by Turkey are of international quality. So we can consider purchasing modern equipment in future keeping in mind the needs of our armed forces.”

The latest progress regarding the purchase of drones from Turkey, Bangladesh Ambassador Masoud Mannan said he was unable to talk about it.

According to diplomatic sources, Bangladesh has previously purchased mine protection vehicles, armored vehicles and multi-dimensional rocket defense systems from Turkey under the existing defense cooperation between the two countries. Last year, the two sides signed an agreement on the sale of automatic guided artillery shells to Bangladesh. Apart from this, Turkey is interested in selling military helicopters and tanks to Bangladesh.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Savasglu visited Bangladesh in December 2020, the first year of the coronavirus infection. He then publicized Turkey’s interest in selling arms to Bangladesh.

Great success in Russia-Ukraine war
Bayraktar’s TB2 drone has previously been in the news due to its successful use in Libya, Syria and the Azerbaijan–Armenia wars. Recently, the role of drones in Ukraine’s fight against Russia has caught the attention of military analysts.

An analysis by MiddleEastEye, a website that monitors the situation in the Middle East, said Bayraktar TB2 drones have proven effective in fighting Russian forces inside mainland Ukraine. Even last April, the drone went into Russian territory and attacked two oil depots. The attack calls into question the effectiveness of Russia’s air defense system.

According to international media, the Ukrainian government started the process of buying this drone from Turkey long before the start of the Russian-Ukraine war. In particular, since 2019, Ukraine has bought at least 36 biracter TB2s.

However, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Ukraine has acquired at least 50 drones from Turkey since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24 this year. If not for the Russian invasion, the Turkish company Biker Technology was supposed to start the process of jointly producing the drone in Ukraine.

According to a June report by Al Monitor, a website that focuses on the situation in the Middle East, Turkish company Biker Technology typically sells the Byractor TB2 for $10 million (about Tk 95 crore) each. However, the company charged Ukraine $7 million for each drone.

Buyers are increasing

Turkey’s Biker Technology started its journey in 1986 to supply machinery to car manufacturers. However, after passing through various stages, the company started to supply Bayraktar TB2 drone commercially for the first time in 2014. So far, the company has supplied more than five hundred TB2 drones.

Seluk Bayrakter is the Chief Technical Officer of Biker Technology, a drone manufacturing company. He and his brother Haluk Bairaktar are the main controllers of this institution. Seluk Bayraktar is the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Seluk Bayraktar recently told Reuters news agency that the Bayraktar TB2 has the ability to move around as an armored vehicle in the air in addition to firing anti-aircraft systems and advanced technology. Biker Technology has the capacity to produce at least 200 drones every year.

According to information on BikerTech’s website, 14 countries have purchased Byracter TB2 so far. Another 16 countries are buying the drone.

Major General (Retd.) ANM Muniruzzaman, President of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies, a security research institute, said that how drones play a controlling role in traditional warfare has been proven in the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

This time, the role of Turkey’s drones in the Russia-Ukraine war has been strongly proved once again. Due to the role of drones in changing the course of war, there is increasing interest among the armies of all countries in the world.

Drones are needed in line with Bangladesh’s plans to modernize the armed forces as well as increase their capabilities. Turkey can be a good source for Bangladesh in this case.

Bangladesh is set to purchase a Turkish combat drone -- Bayraktar TB2 – that Ukraine has been using to combat Russian forces in the ongoing war.

The government has signed an agreement with Turkey to purchase the medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle.

Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan confirmed this to Prothom Alo, saying that the deal was signed recently between the Bangladesh Armed Forces and the drone manufacturing company Bayker Technology.

He said, "I would like to inform you recently we have a company called Bayker which produces drones. Bangladesh Armed Forces has signed a contract with them for the procurement of Bayraktar TB2 UAV. I'm not in a position to give details but I can confirm that there is cooperation between Bangladesh and Turkey regarding drones."

Earlier in an interview with Turkish news agency Anadolu, the Bangladesh ambassador to Turkey, Mosud Mannan, said, “The drones made by Turkey are of international standard. So we can consider purchasing modern equipment in future keeping in mind the needs of our armed forces.”

However, the Bangladesh ambassador refused to make any comment while asked about the latest development of the purchase process during a telephone conversation with him on Saturday night.

According to diplomatic sources, Bangladesh previously purchased mine protection vehicles, armoured vehicles, and multi-dimensional rocket defence systems from Turkey under a bilateral defence cooperation agreement.

The transcontinental nation, last year, signed an agreement to sell automatic guided artillery shells to Bangladesh. Besides, the country has expressed its interest to sell military helicopters and tanks.

Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, during his Bangladesh visit in December 2020, brought his country’s interest in arms selling to the fore for the first time.

Success in Russia-Ukraine war

Bayraktar TB2 drone previously hit the headlines due to its successful use in Libya, Syria and Azerbaijan-Armenia wars. Recently, its role in the Russia-Ukraine war drew the attention of military analysts.

According to an analysis by Middle East Eye, a website that monitors the situation in the Middle Eastern countries, the unmanned combat drone has been proven effective in fighting Russian forces inside mainland Ukraine.

It even managed to enter Russian territory and attack two oil depots there in April, calling the Russian air defense system into question.

The Ukraine government had initiated the process of buying the Turkish drone long before the war with Russia. It had purchased at least 36 Bayraktar TB2 drones in 2019, according to news carried by different international media outlets.
The Ukrainian defence minister Oleksii Reznikov claimed that his country collected at least 50 units of the drone from Turkiye, after commencement of the war with Russia on 24 February. The Bayker Technology was supposed to launch drone production jointly with Ukraine had the Russian invasion not been in place.

According to a June report by US-based news portal Al Monitor, the Bayker Technology usually sells each unit of the drone for $10 million (Tk 95 crore), but Ukraine purchased it at $7 million.

Customers rising

The Bayker Technology was launched in 1986 to supply machinery to car manufacturing companies. However, after passing through various stages, the company started manufacturing drones and supplying Bayraktar TB2 drones commercially in 2014. It has so far supplied more than 500 drones to different nations.

Selçuk Bayraktar, the chief technology officer at Bayker Technology and also son-in-law of president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Haluk Bayraktar, his brother, mainly control the drone manufacturing company.

Selçuk, during a recent interview with news agency Reuters, the Bayraktar TB2 is capable of moving around in the air as an armored vehicle, in addition to its anti-aircraft mechanisms and ability to fire advanced technology shells. The company has an annual production capacity of 200 drones.

Some 14 countries have so far purchased the drone from Turkey while another 16 countries are in the process of buying it, according to the company website.

Maj Gen (retd) ANM Muniruzzaman, president of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), told Prothom Alo that it has been witnessed in the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia how drones play a crucial role in traditional warfare.

Once again, the role of Turkish drones has strongly been proven in the Russia-Ukraine war. Due to its role in changing the course of war, there is a growing interest among the armies across the world, he said.

About the government decision to procure the Turkish drone, the security researcher said there is a need for drones in line with the modernisation plan of the armed forces as well as increasing the military power. Turkey can be a good source for Bangladesh in this case.

Dude!

In case you haven’t noticed there is a global food and oil crisis.

Personally, I would halt all defence imports indefinitely.
The global spending on arms is rising and your enemy on the right is also not holding back. What makes you think being defenseless is a good idea?

We must support BD with everything we have, built it into a country with a meaningful and capable military to support the ongoing development process. There should be no limit to BD-TR cooperation.

They have a country in Turkey that would never halt its defense exports citing some made-up reasons...you know what I mean.

The stronger BD is the better it's for Turkey.

This is a very good acquisition. Hope it will be purchased in sufficient quantities.

Despite all of the limelight air force get now a days, army manpower along with it's mechanized and armoured formation still the main fighting force decide the ultimate battle outcome. Here Bangladesh has a huge quantity gap. It's Tanks, APC, IFV, Artillery, MRLS, Rockets, anti-tank and anti aircraft guns, MANPADs are too little for the actual defence need. Along with acquiring combat drones, army need to acquire these type of weapons in sufficient quantities. And highest importance need to give on manufacturing many of these items locally through building indigenous defence industry. This is only when it's defence vulnerability will be reduced. Otherwise, haphazard acquisition of 5-10 drones here or one squadron fighter jet from Europe there will not solve the fundamental weakness of the defence posture of Bangladesh.
