They were deprived from their youth by the constant barrage of foreign occupation, which caused nothing but misery and despair.. good on them.

But in reality these Western "foreign occupiers" were buying opium from them ( and opium of course grown by forcing farmers ) and were transporting them to the battlefields of Syria to fight against their common enemy - the Socialist government of Bashar al Assad.
