Argentina Shopping for Chinese Fighter Jets
Defense Splurge Set to Include Falklands-Capable Aircraft
MARCH 17, 2015 AT 12:07 PM

Argentina is seeking to purchase 24 advanced fighter aircraft from China, Defense Minister Agustín Rossi told press Tuesday. The jets, it was soon reported, would be capable of reaching the Falkland Islands, a South Atlantic archipelago owned by the United Kingdom but claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas.

Within the next week, “the chief of staff of the Argentinean Air Force is traveling to China along with a technical delegation to analyze the possibilities” of purchasing up to 24 FC-1/JF-17 fighter jets, said Rossi.

“The single-seat, single-engine fighter has a top speed of Mach 1.8 at altitude of 55,000 ft and combat range of 840 miles, allowing it to comfortably fly to Port Stanley and back from the Tierra del Fuego air base in southern Argentina,”wrote British journalist Marco Giannangeli on February 15 after initial high-level talks between Buenos Aires and Beijing.

Rossi confirmed that the government is seeking to buy “no lees than 12 and no more than 24″ fighters.

“This is a new thing for the Argentinean Air Force, which has always had Western equipment,” he said. However, Rossi also mentioned that there are “two formal offers” to buy Spanish-made F1 jets, and the Kfir Block 60 from Israel. “Informally, we also have a French offer,” he added.

Rossi estimated that the purchase process will be finished before the end of the year. He said that when he receives all the formal offers he “will take the different alternatives to the president so she can make the decision,” he said.

On Monday, President Cristina Kirchner, along with Rossi and Army Chief César Milani, announced that the Argentinean army is to receive additional funding of AR$930 million (about US$71 million). “[This is] the largest investment ever made in a long time” to equip the force, she said.

The investment includes the purchase of 120,000 new uniforms bought in China, 35 Hummers, and 30 trucks to transport troops and equipment, among others.

The announcement comes in the same week as a prosecutor in the province of Córdobaasked a judge to bring a case against Milani, who is currently under investigation for human-rights violations during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship.

This first time only JF-17 are mentioned instead of J-10 together that means they have focus on JF-17 finally.you are maybe going to hear some good news soon.

Why?

For the simple reason that partners have no contribution apart from money. Some components but nothing substantial.

33 Canadian companies directly involved in JSF. And Canada is only suppose to be an "observing nation" in the program.
There is much more to an aircraft then just a body and an engine. I'm sure you already know that.

I'm just gonna tell you what someone told me.
"we knew the gulf war was going to happen 6 months before it started. We received a massive order from USAF for xxxxx Missiles."
The company this gentleman worked for is in Canada. And that missile is one of the most sensitive weapons that US sold it to very few nations. And its mostly built in Canada!

Likewise, whether you like it or not, Pakistan builds more than 40% of the components needed to assemble JF-17 in house.

China has helped Pakistan develop JF-17 on 50/5o finanance and
59/41 production basis, but final assembly is done in Pakistan.since
China is not inducting this aircraft in their air force,Pakistan will also
provide training and after sale service.

JF-17 is more suitable than J-10 for Argentina. JF-17 is a light fighter in the class of Gripen selected by Brazil.

It's a diplomatic issue. What do you think would happen if Pakistan was the one negotiating? The UK would be pissed off at Pakistan. It's diplomatically easier for everyone if China does the negotiating.

Eitherway, Pakistan is getting 50% of the profits anyway. With future development of the JF-17 having moved almost completely to PAC, expect more domestic components to enter the JF-17.

I think most likely this plan is null. The very reason why UK decided to join China led AIIB is to convinced China,UK is a better allies compare to Argentina. China really appreciate UK decision to abandon US and join China side. China will return the favour to UK.

Argentina is a much bigger country than Britain. To China, Argentina is much more important than Britain.

China will probably only sell them K-8 or JL-9G.

If so Argentina would buy MiG-35 from Russia. China cannot afford to lose this opportunity to establish influence in the Americas. China will supply JF-17 to Argentina.

 Argentina is broke. Most of their money is loan from China. Russia wants real hard cash plus mig-35 will not come cheap.

Not so. China wants a foothold in the Americas. Argentina is key. Heck, Argentina can host a Chinese military base near Antarctica.
