Argentina looks to buy Russian MiG-29 fighter jets

The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina – FAA) will seek to purchase more than 15 MiG-29 Fulcrum multirole fighter aircraft from Russia.

That was reported by kommersant.ru.

Argentina sent to Russia a commercial offers for the purchase of more than 15 MiG-29 fighters. The Argentine government will analysing offers received for combat airplanes for the Argentine Air Force.

The Mikoyan MiG-29 (NATO reporting name: “Fulcrum”) is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s, the MiG-29, along with the larger Sukhoi Su-27, was developed to counter new American fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. The MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1982.

That is a misleading article and thread title. Particularly since the article states:

Options include, upgraded Israeli Kfirs, Mirage F1s, armed versions of the Italian M-346 Master trainer and the Korean FA-50. Argentina had looked into buying new Gripen’s from Sweden via Brazil but this was vetoed by the United Kingdom which makes a large number of internal components for the aircraft. They had also looked at JF-17’s from China, but the JF-17s proved too expensive to modify.

besides offers of Mirage F1s, IAI Kfir C10 and C12, Lockheed Martin F-16s, Mirage 2000s, and Chengdu JF-17s (plus a denied request to the US government for Northrop F-5Es), the MoD has received new offers that include new and second-hand platforms.
Argentina was offered second-hand Italian Air Force AMX attack aircraft that could replace the A-4ARs.
New aircraft included Hongdu L-15, Textron AirLand Scorpion, Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50, and Alenia M-346.
The L-15, Scorpion, and AMX offers are to understood to have been discarded: the L-15 for technical reasons, Scorpion because it is not the air force's requirement, and the AMX because it is not a big enough capability increase over the A-4AR and could not replace the Mirages.

they really need some fighters........too bad they couldn't get the gripen, wonder why?

they should just get f16 to be honest they are cheap and incentives from lm would sweeten the deal as the production line will end this year with final f16's going to iraq and indoneasia

280 million for 14 Kfir aircraft = 20 million a pop.

Perhaps ask Taiwan for some F-CK-1 Ching Kuo? If talking to the Russians, why not also attack version Yak 130 (similar Aeromacchi M-346)? There aren't many other aircraft I can think of.

Economic limitations, remember? BRICS was keen to get Argentina on-board initially but after Cristina Fernandez government screwed up their economy, BRICS members decided against it.

Plus, Su-30s are deep penetration strike/aerial fighters, meant to go deep into hostile territory and bomb the mickey out of the enemies. Argentine government has good relations with almost all and most likely MiG-29s would be just for relative modernisation of their fleet.

Also Su-30s cost an arm and a leg to maintain and operate. These jets are very powerful, which not many countries can afford in large numbers, especially when they don't a credible threat to justify a purchase.
