Chinese Stealth fighter May Used US F-117 NightHawk Technology

A Chinese stealth fighter jet that could pose a significant threat to American air superiority may borrow from US technology, it has been claimed.

Balkan military officials and other experts said China may have gleaned knowledge from a US F-117 Nighthawk that was shot down over Serbia in 1999.

"At the time, our intelligence reports told of Chinese agents crisscrossing the region where the F-117 disintegrated, buying up parts of the plane from local farmers," said Admiral Davor Domazet-Loso, Croatia's military chief of staff during the Kosovo war. "We believe the Chinese used those materials to gain an insight into secret stealth technologies ... and to reverse-engineer them."

The Nighthawk was downed by a Serbian anti-aircraft missile during a bombing raid on 27 March 1999. It was the first time one of the fighters had been hit, and the Pentagon blamed clever tactics and sheer luck. The pilot ejected and was rescued.

B-2 Engineer Convicted of Selling Military Secrets To China

A former B-2 stealth bomber engineer convicted of selling military secrets to China is due to be sentenced in federal court on Monday.

Noshir Gowadia, 66, faces up to life in prison for his conviction on 14 counts, including conspiracy, communicating national defence information to aid a foreign nation, and violating the arms export control act.

Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway is due to issue her sentence after listening to arguments from the prosecution and defence. Gowadia, who has been in custody without bail since his 2005 arrest, is also expected to have an opportunity to make a statement.

A federal jury in August found Gowadia guilty after deliberating for six days. They had heard 39 days of evidence over nearly four months. The jury acquitted him on three counts.

Prosecutors said Gowadia helped China design a stealth cruise missile to get money to pay the $15,000-a-month mortgage on his multimillion dollar home overlooking the ocean in Haiku on Maui. They said he pocketed at least $110,000 from the sale of military secrets.

China's stealth fighter 'copied US'

Balkan military officials have reported that China may have gleaned some of its technological knowledge for its recently tested stealth fighter from a US F-117 Nighthawk that was shot down over Serbia in 1999.

China's J-20 stealth fighter took its first test flight earlier this month, just days before a visit to Beijing by Robert Gates, the US defence secretary.

The Nighthawk, which belonged to the world's first ever range of stealth fighters, was shot down on March 27, 1999, during NATO's aerial bombing of Serbia in the Kosovo war.

'Military attaches'

The downing of the Nighthawk, the pilot of which ejected and was rescued, was the first time one of the much-touted "invisible" fighters had ever been hit.

The Pentagon believed a combination of clever tactics and sheer luck allowed the Soviet-built SA-3 missile to bring down the fighter plane.

The wreckage was strewn over a wide area of flat farmlands, and civilians collected the parts, some the size of small cars, as souvenirs.

A senior Serbian military official confirmed that pieces of the wreckage were removed by souvenir collectors, and that some ended up "in the hands of foreign military attaches".

In Washington, an air force official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the service was unaware of any connection between the downed F-117 plane and the development of Chinese stealth technology for the J-20.

Efforts to get comment from China's defence ministry were unsuccessful.

China's multi-role stealth fighter, known as the Chengdu J-20, made its inaugural flight on January 11, revealing dramatic progress in the country's efforts to develop cutting-edge military technologies.

Although the twin-engine J-20 is at least eight or nine years from entering action, it could become a rival to the top-of-the-line US F-22 Raptor, the successor to the Nighthawk and the only stealth fighter currently in service.

China rolled out the J-20 just days before the visit by Gates, leading some analysts to speculate that the timing was intended to demonstrate the growing might of China's armed forces.

Plane exhibited

Parts of the downed F-117 wreckage, such as the left wing with US Air Force insignia, the cockpit canopy, ejection seat, pilot's helmet and radio, are exhibited at Belgrade's aviation museum.

"I don't know what happened to the rest of the plane," said Zoran Milicevic, deputy director of the museum.

"A lot of delegations visited us in the past, including the Chinese, Russians and Americans ... but no one showed any interest in taking any part of the jet."

Zoran Kusovac, a Rome-based military consultant, said the government of Slobodan Milosevic, the late Serbian president, routinely shared captured Western equipment with its Chinese and Russian allies.

"The destroyed F-117 topped that wish-list for both the Russians and Chinese," Kusovac said.

Russia's Sukhoi T-50 prototype stealth fighter made its maiden flight last year and is due to enter service in about four years.

It is likely that the Russians also gleaned knowledge of stealth technology from the downed Nighthawk.

'Logical assessment'

The F-117, developed in great secrecy in the 1970s, began service in 1983.

While not completely invisible to radar, its shape and radar-absorbent coating made detection extremely difficult.

The radar cross-section was further reduced because the wings' leading and trailing edges were composed of non-metallic honeycomb structures that do not reflect radar rays.

Kusovac said insight into this critical technology, and particularly the plane's secret radiation-absorbent exterior coating, would have significantly enhanced China's stealth knowledge.

Alexander Huang of Taipei's Tamkang University said the J-20 represented a major step forward for China.

He described Domazet-Loso's statement as "a logical assessment".

"There is no other stronger source for the origin of the J-20's stealthy technology," said Huang, an expert on China's air force.

"The argument the Croatian chief-of-staff makes is legitimate and cannot be ruled out."

Western diplomats have said China maintained an intelligence post in its Belgrade embassy during the Kosovo war.

The building was mistakenly struck by US bombers in May, 1999, killing three people inside.

"What that means is that the Serbs and Chinese would have been sharing their intelligence," said Alexander Neill, head of the Asia security programme at the Royal United Services Institute, a defence think tank in London.

"It's very likely that they shared the technology they recovered from the F-117, and it's very plausible that elements of the F-117 got to China."

The J-20 is based on 40 Year old Stealth Technology which China stole from the Balkans.

The J-20 won't be ready for combat service for another 10-15 years, by then USA would already be integrating the next generation Stealth Fighter.

China is 40 years behind USA in terms of Arms technology.

US Media has a habit of scare mongering.

China has just replaced Soviet Union.

J-20 is really based on 40 year old tech??? Confirm it???

After looking a headline, why u think china will gvie j20 to pakistan?

Do Americans actually find comfort in these stories? Fascinating!

That is exactly what China wants the Americans to believe.

It's more like America has replaced the Soviet Union and China took over the position as the US. America is now bankrupting and endangering themselves by entering into an arms race with China and is doing so with little money. They are foolish to think that money really does grow on trees or something..

Well, people should stop singing Chinese copy song anymore . If the copy is that easy then lots of countries in this world those who have enough resources through all legal means to extract information of any particular high tech machine. They why or why not ?. For example , Japan, Korea, Australia or EU, Partners of JSF etc etc etc.
People should admire the hardship of Chinese people to boost nation moral.

The J-20 is based on a 18 year old idea..
But the materials..and construction is brand new.
Right now through.. Pakistan is NOT in the picture..
First..because we would rather wait.
second. the Chinese are a little tired of leasing stuff to us.

why so.....?

China might sell these to us but it's not certain because this is a very sophisticated technology. the jf-17 is quite simple compared to its contemporaries and I heard China is even offering ToT to other countries for the fc (jf-17).

Well, is that your opinion which should be considered or reality? I have doubt whether is any of these two.

18 year old idea. Wow. How long did it take to get F22? And why are they buying these machines and are some willing to get them for any price? They must be idiots doing that.

About Pakistan not in the picture. I doubt that. Numerous MKI and PAKFA will make that picture. Or do you need that picture when we are toasted? Cool.

Chinese are tired? They need Pakistani route and friends in the neighborhood. Everyone is tired of each other. That is the reality.

Read up on the Lock Mart JAST... Or is a a frikkin coincidence that the J-20 looks really like it.An 18 year old idea doesn't mean an 18 year old design and construction philosophy..
When you pioneer something.. you are bound to face delays..
How long did it take to first break the sound barrier??..
How long did it take for the next jet to do it?? Or the one after it?
What sudden improvements did the rival aircraft have?
No offcourse not.. we just use wikipedia now dont we..and that is the depth of our analysis.

And oh.. did somebody tell you they capped the F-22 at 187 machines.. since the initial advertisement for them seemed "outdated"..a cold war idea..
The USAF had to jam the A into F/A-22 to make them buy even 187.
Again.. I guess that never came to your head.

When Pakistan is not in the picture.. it doesn't mean the PAF has no idea what it is.. They just arent interested in the current state of it.
Like the J-10.. they want to wait on it.. and let it mature before giving a RFP to the Chinese. So.. unless they ask about it..they arent in the J-20 program...not for the Chinese anyway.
MKi and PAK-Fa.. if you can see beyond that.. Is not the only problem. The entire IAF is in upgrade.. which is factored into something called an Air staff Requirement.. This document envisions what the PAF is to do in response to it. Usually.. ASR's are set for each piece of hardware individually.
The F-16 met or exceeded the ASR of the PAF back in the 80's..
So it is unusual that with OMG.. help my soul.. MKI's and FGFA's(that is the name of the threat if you know)..every PAF officer that I spoke to.. who is or had spent even a teency bit of time at AHQ is happy with the JF.. these guys cant all be happy.. after all ..there are always skeptics.. but they are..
more over.. they are happy with their choice of the FC-20 as well..
but state that the Chinese have not yet officially or unofficially offered a look at the J-20.
So seeing from your view ..three options come to light:
1. I am a Big F Liar.. in that case.. contact the admin.
2. I cant tell when people are lying to me...and that the PAF officers have become regular liars.
3. All of the above gentlemen are first class idiots who dont know a thing about Air power or its application for Pakistan..and we are screwed.
make your decision.. and be quick about it.. the rest must be curious to know.

The Chinese are showing their disappointment with our financial performance.. One of the key factors in the multi billion dollar deal was a clear cut message by the Chinese. They want to know where every penny goes. Along with quarterly reports on the project status.
They are cheesed off that you made them invest in large projects..only to give in to the west at your whim.
They do wish a balancing act using us.. but no one wants to build new rooms for a sinking cruise liner..They want the ship in order before they give more.. and yeah.. that isnt for the civilian government only.
They arent too happy with a few contracts given to the Turks which were supposed to come their way...especially when it involved a platform based on Chinese tech.. nuff said.

The above is my opinion..
If you wanna be sarcastic about something do it with a little thought.. instead of making smart arse comments.
