More than 260 Pakistani troops kidnapped by militants freed DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan, Sept 0 (AP) - Militants on Monday freed more than 260 Pakistani troops kidnapped nearly two weeks ago in South Waziristan tribal area, near the border with Afghanistan, security officials and a militant said. The freed soldiers were handed over to members of a jirga (tribal council) in Ladha, a village in South Waziristan where they had been abducted on Aug. 30. Army spokesman Maj-Gen . Waheed Arshad had no confirmation of the troops' release. The freed soldiers were to be handed later Monday to government officials in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, an official said. It was not clear whether there were any conditions to the soldiers' release. Militants had earlier demanded that authorities withdraw the military from the area and free more than a dozen of their comrades. Six of the abducted troops were released last week in what an official said was a “goodwill” gesture to the jirga negotiating their release. Meanhile, in the Nawaz Kot area of South Waziristan, suspected militants opened fire from their car at the security post, drawing retaliatory fire from troops based there, Maj- Gen Arshad said. The militant leader, Qari Sana, and four fighters were killed in the clash, while three others were wounded but managed to flee, he said. (First Posted @ 10:05; Updated @ 18:05 PST)

Aaj is crap. Soldiers will be handed over to the government today, currently they are typically free with no threats in jirga. Read Pakistan Defence.

They are freed as geo was reporting it too. Now i think and inquiry pannel should be created to establish as to why 300 soliders laid their arms down wihtout firing a single bullet and those responsible should be court martialed.

ISLAMABAD ( 2007-09-10 22:29:59 ) :
Local Taliban have freed over 260 kidnapped soldiers, who were kidnapped and held hostage last month in a remote tribal area, local officials and TV channels reported Monday.

The militants held the soldiers hostage after their convoy was ambushed in the troubled South Waziristan tribal region on august 30th.

A jirga or council of elders had been involved in negotiations with the kidnappers, who had been demanding release of their colleagues and end to army’s operation in the region.

TV channels reported that the soldiers were handed over to jirga members at Ladha, a town in South Waziristan.

They will be handed over to the local authorities in Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan later today.

It was not immediately known whether or not the government has accepted their demands.

It was the second kidnapping in the region in less than 15 days. A group of 19 soldiers was also kidnapped few days before the August 30th kidnapping and one soldier from the first group was also killed by the kidnappers.

The local Taliban were angry at the army activities despite an agreement between the two sides that army would not carry out any operation in the region.

The latest kidnappings in South Waziristan follow the collapse of peace deals in the region in July.

Taliban accused the government of violating peace deals by sending army to the region.

Those responsible should be promoted.

bad news friend:

Negotiations with tribal elders to secure the release of the soldiers captured in the nearby Ladha area were continuing and media reports on Monday that the men had been freed were incorrect, military officials said on condition of anonymity. (Posted @ 12:12 PST)

they r still not released

These tribal chaps, who are the Taliban, are horrid!

I am sure they are now horse-trading!

They cannot be trusted!

I don't wish to hurt anyone's sentiment, but as a soldier I find this type of nonsense very irritating!

This flip flop.

Obviously they would have promised something wherein the media reported release!

Apparently they reneged on the "release" when "Qari Big Beard" and four friends (Medium beard, little beard, big beard with Henna and too young to grow a beard) got killed sticking their tongues out at the troops while driving by in vehicles stolen from the FC in an ambush.

Baitullah stated through his spokes person "The Great Dabong" that the killing ocurred because the FC were following "American interests". When asked what he thinks Pakistan's interests are he stated "Let us behead everyone we don't like, destroy every educational institution and business in FATA, and then we want to set up our exemplary Islamic State in the rest of Pakistan". He also said that they would leave some electricians and engineers alive, since they need them to maintain the power plants that provide free electricity...Oh, and they don't like the army firing back after they attack them with IED's, RPG's and suicide bombings - its not "nice" to attack your "own Muslim Brethren" he says.

Please do carry on telling us how it is in pakistan's interest in the long/short term to attack the tribals/taliban and that the US/NATO are such good friends of ours.
Your anti islamic pakistan agenda is slowly seeping through, you fail to realize that the pakistani army is an islamic army with jihad at its heart.
You want brother to kill brother for sake of non muslims?
Going back to the soldiers held in Waziristan......mutiny thats what i call it
Maybe AgNoStIc your dream of the pakistani army falling apart and civil war might be come true and then you can rejoice.
MAY ALLAH ALWAYS PROTECT PAKISTAN...:pakistan: :pakistan: :pakistan:
