Archbishop of Bengalore Peter Machado has condemned the removal of a 12-foot statue of Jesus Christ from a Christian cemetery on the outskirts of India’s north Karnataka state by local police on Thursday.

Hindu radicals had objected to the statue, and villagers had said some ‘outside agitators’ had warned Christians from visiting the 4.5-acre site, which had been allocated by the state government for burial for the community in Doddasagarahalli village, according to Crux.

“The Christians of Bangalore consider the forceful removal of the statue of Lord Jesus at our legally allotted burial ground at Doddasagarahalli as unacceptable and are greatly shocked and we condemn this high-handed action of the local authorities,” Machado said in a statement.

He noted the site had been a place of Christian devotion for 30 to 40 years without any difficulty, and there has been “absolutely no problem from local people to our burials, nor our prayers and devotions on the hill.”

Modi’s Hindu supremacist ideology will target other minorities after Muslims: PM

This comes against the backdrop of growing extremism and religious intolerance towards religious minority of the country under the rule of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led right wing BJP government.

Last month, dozens of people were killed and hundreds injured, and at least two mosques were attacked in the worst communal riots in India’s capital New Delhi in decades, triggered by clashes between supporters of a controversial citizenship law and those against it.

The law gives migrants fleeing persecution from neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh an easier path to citizenship, except Muslims.

Critics say it is further proof that Modi, emboldened by a resounding election victory this year, is moving quickly to reshape India as a Hindu nation and weaken its secular foundations.

The Modi government had also stripped Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K) of its constitutional semi-autonomous status on August 5 last year and clamped a draconian curfew which remains in place ever since with millions of Kashmiris literally cut off from the rest of the world.

I would not have posted on this thread; the incident fills me with fury, and I am under medical advice to avoid all stress. This post is to explain some arcana of the bigots who rule us now, thanks to an uncomprehending electorate.

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, Yediyurappa, has been in and out of the BJP. He was very prominent the first time they came to power in that state, then fell out of favour, left the BJP, formed his own political party, and finally returned penitent to the party. On this occasion of ministry-making, he has been given very clear signals that he is on probation, deviation from the party line will not be tolerated. It created waves when he failed to get appointments with the Jack-Sprat-and-his-wife duo who rule in New Delhi now, in spite of being CM of an important state.

In recent months, there has been one Modi-like act of bizarre misuse of power after another. The one immediately before this was the razing of an entire settlement of squatters (they had no land title, lived in zinc-sheet, cardboard and sacking huts and had no water or drainage) on the grounds that someone, somewhere had complained to a mid-level corporation official about their being Bangladeshis (=Muslim illegal immigrant). The whole settlement, the majority of whose occupants could produce documentation making it clear that they were Indian citizens, was wiped out in a few hours, with strong police support.

And now this.

This particular offender is setting out to be more royalist than the king. Not that it does much good to the sufferers of his Tughlaq-shahi to know what precise wrinkle in his relationship with the BJP and with the RSS brings out these unspeakably illegal actions. The fact is that he is getting away with everything.

Women, students, and Dalits.

[An afterthought] One of the very minor slivers of light in the all-enveloping shade is the vigorous and active participation of Muslim women, supported and encouraged by their men, and in collaboration with women of various other systems of faith. A very, very small consolation.

Nice work India for the first time ever you have managed to become Boogieman of Asia and Pakistan is finally out of that micro lens of International community. I hope Modi keeps it up and by the time he is done India will not need any Enemies.

Yes, that's how it works, isn't it? Defining ourselves by others?

Actually being under microscope has repercussions economically and diplomatically. I am not saying Pakistanis are saints but we need as less attention as possible considering we have too many morons in our midst. Also no way in hell Pakistan has ever launched a govt sponsored campaign against hindus and christians and butchered them on streets. I can only imagine if that happened in Pakistan we would be facing north korea level sanctions by now.

It was not government-sponsored, it was BJP- and RSS- and VHP-sponsored. The government role was masterly inactivity, not sponsorship.

As for facing sanctions, Modi was not allowed into the US, and was treated like a pariah by responsible governments for years. What he and his sycophant FM have done to Indian foreign policy and respect for India in international circles will take decades to undo. If it can be undone.

BJP/RSS/VHP haVE always used state assets covertly to induce violence. Even western media is buzzing with news of how government is siding with Hindutva's to crush muslim protest. Inactivity was on part of AAP who basically stood idle and gained the most by blunders of BJP.

All this is still reversible as US and EU are still turning a blind eye to situation but there will come a point when pressure will mount on respective govts to take a stance. In current world every deed is posted on internet and social media so basically all the worst parts get etched on the wall for eternity. Once you get a negative label nowadays it is impossible to brush off.

Also i really hope some sane leader steps forward considering as things are progressing MODI/SHAH duo seems set to rule for a long time to come with almost next to nothing in political opposition. Congress seems as good as dead.

True. You may have noticed that since its widest expansion, that political machine has lost four states. You may also have noticed that cases that were soft-pedalled by Sangh Parivar governments have in some cases been put on the fast track by courts. Bottom line: when in power, they compromise the power of the state and use it to serve their own purposes; fortunately, they soon lose power.

Even western media is buzzing with news of how government is siding with Hindutva's to crush muslim protest.

Are you referring to the lathi-charge by policemen on the Jamia Millia library? Or to the vast gulf between that same police's booking one set of offenders, and leaving the other set to go scot-free? Certainly there are examples of this, all drawn from the Gujarat play-book.

This is counter-balanced by the numerous actions of the Supreme Court as well as of individual state governments. I encourage you to realise that the Sangh Parivar has had a narrow window in which to spread fear and terror.

Inactivity was on part of AAP who basically stood idle and gained the most by blunders of BJP.

Delhi, as a Union Territory, is a peculiar case. I deplore the lack of political and confidence activity by AAP, but on the administrative side, it has to be taken into consideration that they can do nothing. Literally.

I take grim pleasure in speculating on Modi's thoughts as he sees the familiar script unfold.

Sir any idea how West Bengal elections in 2021 will turn out? Anything less than a thumping Didi victory won't turn this menace....

She will lose some more seats, I think.

Don't forget that like TB, everyone has a muted indifference to other religions. It takes a catalysing agent to make this flare up into a life-threatening disease. People have begun to realise this.

Among other factors, besides the shunning of the other that is endemic and is to some small extent unlocked by a professional effort to provoke trouble, and to invoke the worst character traits of people, note that the BJP is largely centred on the Bihari and UP populations working in Bengal.

No Indian should ever lecture any Muslim on minority rights again. What is this blatant discrimination against a useless statue?

Hindus and Sri Lankans on this forum cry over a Buddha in Afghanistan in which the perpetrator was punished by Taliban (and while other statues still exist there,) but these hypocries don't see this is desecration happening to Muslim and Christian symbols in India.

In general, I agree with you; these b**tards need a swift knee in their nether parts, and a rocking big victory by Didi over them would help. The trouble is with the moronic cow-belt: Bihar (to an extent), UP, Uttarakhand and Haryana. Note that their bastions of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh (also members of that cow-belt), and Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh have fallen.

People in my family have joint business with Muslim businessmen...This is awful....BJP is trying very hard to become again a Hindi heartland party that is too much into parochialism, pseudoscience etc..I thought 2014 was a chance for them to be a economy first liberal sort of party...It is again becoming a party for Hindi speaking upper caste Hindus
