Apple Inc. has a backup plan if the U.S.-China trade war gets out of hand.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s primary manufacturing partner has enough capacity to make all iPhones bound for the U.S. outside of China if necessary, according to a senior executive at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer now makes most of the smartphones in the Chinese mainland.

China is a crucial cog in Apple’s business, the origin of most of its iPhones and iPads as well as its largest international market. But President Donald Trump has threatened Beijing with new tariffs on about $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, an act that would escalate tensions dramatically while levying a punitive tax on Apple’s most profitable product.

Hon Hai, known also as Foxconn, is the American giant’s most important manufacturing partner. It will fully support Apple if it needs to adjust its production as the U.S.-Chinese trade spat gets grimmer and more unpredictable, board nominee and semiconductor division chief Young Liu told an investor briefing in Taipei on Tuesday.

“Twenty-five percent of our production capacity is outside of China and we can help Apple respond to its needs in the U.S. market,” said Liu, adding that investments are now being made in India for Apple. “We have enough capacity to meet Apple’s demand.”

Apple shares were up less than 1% to $194.40 in New York Tuesday morning.

Apple has not given Hon Hai instructions to move production out of China, but it is capable of moving lines elsewhere according to customers’ needs, Liu added. The company will respond swiftly and rely on localized manufacturing in response to the trade war, just as it foresaw the need to build a base in the U.S. state of Wisconsin two years ago, he said.

It’s unclear if India will ever become a major production base for Apple’s marquee device. Foxconn is now running quality tests for the iPhone Xr series there and plans to begin mass production at a facility in the suburbs of Chennai. Older models are already assembled at a Wistron plant in Bangalore.

Foxconn has also agreed to build a 13,000-worker facility in Wisconsin in exchange for more than $4.5 billion in government incentives. But that project has since come under criticism for low-paying jobs, sudden dismissals and ever-changing goals. On Tuesday, executives reaffirmed that employment goal, saying construction remained on schedule and that it will hire as many as 2,000 Americans by the end of 2020.

It will also start making networking and server products for the U.S. market by the end of next year, on top of LCDs starting next year, Liu said.

. . .
Off course it is well known, it is only the neo-liberal greedy business class of US that is reaping maximum profit by manufacturing Iphones in China but it is not a perpetual process, the wages and production costs are now rising in China with increasing quality of life of chinese workers and I am sure Apple must have already started looking for "cheap" replacements outside of china.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Philippines are all possible future alternative places for Apple to invest and outsource the manufacturing of its products.

Interesting statement by Foxconn

That means, up to one million jobs in China can be wiped out if the company moves out.

.
How is the one million jobs calculated?

I would say that Foxconn is talking about assembly line, just like iPhone being manufactured in India. i.e. 100% parts are imported from China/Taiwan/Korea with Chinese/Taiwanese/Korea technology, but assembled in India, together with "Made in India" label.

Vietnam is the biggest Samsung manufacturing base, but nearly 100% parts are imported from China and Korea. Just look at the import/export data.

There have been a long discussion on Vietnam media about "Albeit being one of the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, Vietnam cannot make even a screw for phone". It is still true now. But how many countries in the world can? Possibly no one other than China and Taiwan.

They can be all made on the Mars if they put effort into it.

Apple are duluded if they think people will buy their flagship Iphone made in India
FYI,

Boeing, LM, Sikorsky, Airbus all make their products in India. The fuselages for Apaches, Chinooks & the US presidential choppers are made by the JV of Tata's TASL and their respective American/European counterpart. While I do agree that our PSUs are incompetent, our private firms are world leaders in manufacturing and they produced results which meet or exceed international standards

All major Chinese smartphone brands set-up shop in India and are assembling their phones locally which also includes local sourcing except for fab components. Foxconn already produces Xiaomi's phones and has recently started trail production of iphones and these are reported by International sources since y'all don't trust Indian sources until it suits your narrative

You can rant all day but India along with Bangladesh & Vietnam are the next big trio for low end manufacturing since China is moving to higher end manufacturing and also wants to focus on finance, banking & service based industries

Haven’t you noticed you don’t receive a single thank despite your cheap lie in trolling on Vietnam?

We import 100 percent and don’t even make a screw? All iPhone items are made elsewhere but not in the US?

Shameless clown!

Just google in Vietnamese *vietnam không sản xuất nổi đinh vít cho điện thoại"; and i am not talking about Korean or Taiwanese companies located in Vietnam.

This is not the first time i talk about how weak Vietnam is in mechanical manufacturing, from the basic thing like material and metallurgy.

You need to learn how to accept the idea which is different from yours, kid. Seeing Vietnam from Germany can be rosy, but the fact is not so. We are going the way of Thailand, not Taiwan, thank to leaders coming from the South.
