Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'Why would you buy a PC anymore?' - Yahoo Finance

Apple CEO Tim Cook is out beating the drum for the 12-inch iPad Pro tablet, which launches later this week, and he doesn't really see why anybody would need a full personal computer anymore.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Cook said, "I think if you're looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?"

He continued: "Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones."

But recent history is against him. The iPad has seen seven straight quarters of declining sales — measured against the previous year — dipping below 10 million for the first time since mid-2011, and analysts seem to have given up on it. The overall tablet market has been declining for the past year as well.

Meanwhile, Apple's Mac business has been doing better than ever before — last quarter, the company sold a record 5.71 million Macs.

The iPad Pro is Apple's latest attempt to reverse this trend. Like the Microsoft Surface, which Cook once described as being like a combination refrigerator and toaster, the iPad Pro comes with an optional attachable keyboard. You can also buy a stylus for it to sketch on the screen. It also has a larger screen than those of previous iPads, coming in at almost 13 inches diagonally.

Cook acknowledged that the larger iPhone screen, introduced with the iPhone 6 in 2014, might have hurt iPad and iPad Mini sales. But he said Apple didn't mind as long as it was cannibalizing itself.

We'll be testing the iPad Pro, out later this week, and see how it compares with Microsoft's Surface Pro 4.

He's correct but for the wrong reason
Microsoft Continuum Will Make Windows 10 Smartphones A PC In Your Pocket

. .
  1. iPad Pro is under powered as compared to any PC
  2. It is aimed at content consumption not creation
  3. iOS is very limited as compared to Windows or even Mac OS X
  4. Not many engineering software (CAD) are available even for Mac OS X
I own almost all products of Apple (except Apple watch, MacBook 12) and still for CAD and simulations, I have to use a powerful windows based Machines. After Windows 10, the popularity of windows is expected to increase based on tech and user reviews. Tim Cook is actually damaging the future of Apple. After Steve Jobs, Apple has lost the true innovator and charismatic leader and this is reflected in the products and the statistics.

People will buy PC, because I can play Fallout 4 the fcuking way i want it to be played.

Hell Yeah. There is no way a tablet could ever be a replacement to a game played over a fucking Asus R9 380 OC Strix graphic card and an Intel core I7.

No matter how advanced tablets become they can never replace laptops and no matter how powerful laptops become they can never replace Desktops. If someone really wants to work/gaming nothing comes close to a Desktop PC for mobile computing a laptop is fine. Apple with all its latest gimmicks "New Macbook" or even Macbook Air is nothing but a device to surf internet and do little tasks nothing serious can be done on these devices they are too under powered.

This is great! I like this new trend of tablets with detachable keypads. People don't have to carry heavy laptops any more.
Extremely helpful for someone like me, who has to travel quite often and still need enough power of a highend-laptop.

I believe you have to carry laptops as no tablet can replace a Laptop except the Razer Edge Pro Tablet.

I disagree, search for the MSI GT80 Titan Laptop Faster than most of the desktops.
But I do agree on one thing that its nuts to compare a laptop to a desktop.

Not everyone uses computers for gaming.
There are different devices for different purposes. For me, RAM takes precedence over a faster processor. Decent processor and display does the job.
