Antony overrules Army, orders probe into Kashmir youth's killing

NEW DELHI/SRINAGAR: Against protests in Kashmir over the killing of a youth, defence minister AK Antony ordered a speedy inquiry into the incident overruling the Army and directed that strong action be taken against anybody found guilty on Thursday.

"I have told the Army to complete the inquiry at the earliest and if anybody is found guilty we will take strong action," he told reporters in Delhi. Earlier the Ministry spokesman issued a statement saying the same.

Hilal Ahmad Dar was killed allegedly in Army firing on Tuesday night in Bandipora in north Kashmir, triggering protests by locals who claimed that he was an innocent local youth and not a militant.

Prior to the defence minister's directive, Army ruled out the need for any probe, maintaining that the deceased was a militant and weapons were recovered alongside him after being killed in retaliatory fire.

"For us there is nothing to prove ... it is clear. Army is a disciplined force and carries out operations with honesty and integrity," general officer commanding of the Army's 15 Corps Lt General Om Prakash told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar earlier in the day.

He said the operation in which the youth was killed in Bandipora district on Tuesday night was based on intelligence inputs about movement of militants for the past three days through the area.

"During this operation, movement was observed late in the night. When they were challenged, they opened firing first which was retaliated. One person was killed and weapons were also recovered from the spot," Lt Gen Prakash said.

Local residents have alleged that Dar was killed in custody.

28 crore allegation is utter BS. Please verify your sources first. The painting was sold for about 3 lakh and the proceeds went to charity. The painting was created solely for the purpose of securing monetary assistance for some orphanage (or something like that).

Plz, so you link Marad to him? Just because it happened under his watch is BS claim to sullen his reputation. The paintings ' price is ridiculous but that's capitalism, get used to it. If there was any claim of impropriety, a witch hunt would have begun.

Elizabeth Antony refutes allegations of 28 crore deal for her paintings

Talks about a Rs 28 crore deal between Defence Minister A. K. Antony’s wife Elizabeth and the cash-strapped Air India was a debate of high intensity on the social network on Tuesday.

Elizabeth, a painter by hobby was the centre of dispute following reports that a series of her paintings exhibited at the India Habitat Centre were purchased by the airlines for the whopping sum in December last year.

Just as the issue was making a viral attack in the virtual world, Elizabeth stepped out refuting the incident saying it was politically motivated to sensationalise a noble cause.

Elizabeth responded through Facebook: “I am posting this message after seeing some rumours circulating in the internet about an art exhibition. The exhibition had a total of 24 art exhibits (works of others included) and were sold for a cumulative Rs. 16 lakhs.”

In most of the ‘defamatory’ posts she was seen with one of her paintings allegedly sold for a huge prize. Elizabeth clarified: “The controversial painting circulated in news and social media was not sold to Airport Authority of India, but to a private art collector for a figure of Rs. 95,000. AAI had brought four paintings for a total of Rs. 2.5 lahks.”

Moreover, she asserted that the exhibition was a fund-raiser for treatment of cancer patients.

“Navoothan Charitable Foundation has maintained the records and bills of all the financial transactions in the most professional manner and the proceeds are used entirely for cancer cause,” Elizabeth said.

Its very tragic to see fanatics such as our fellow forum member "bhairava" attempt to defame one of the most honest politicians alive with false propaganda.

My question is what is this saint doing overruling army? Army is covered by AFSPA though sanctioned by central government for prosecution and what is his motivation in strong action against army? I do not condone killing of innocents but army can be used only in disturbed areas as army is trained for stron action and so collateral damage is high. Let him take his pick - either army in JK or use the JK police.
