Antisubmarine aircraft P-3C Orion and P-8I Neptune -Best Pics i have seen till date
By Andrew
Location:Seattle, Washington, USA

Within a few days I was able to observe two antisubmarine aircraft. One P-3C "Orion". A second P-8I "Neptune". P-8I - is an export version of the aircraft P-8A "Poseidon", designed specifically for the Indian Navy. It should be replaced who is now in service with the Tu-142ME, the production of which was carried out in Taganrog. The very same aircraft P-8A was created to replace the already outdated P-3 "Orion" in the ranks of the US Navy.

In my stories more often heard the word "accidentally". Thus, it was at this time. Coming home from work, I noticed that the airfield Paine Field fits a plane, followed by a long black trail stretches from the engines. For a moment in my head flashed the thought - the AN-12. Frankly, I would not be surprised that after the meeting at this airport, "Ruslan", Yak-18 and MiG-29. But it was not him.As soon as he turned, low wing told me that it could be anti-submarine aircraft P-3 "Orion". And so it proved. Quickly came to the band, I saw this as a propeller aircraft just landed, turned and ready to fly again. I was very happy about that, because, of course, wanted to make it in flight.

2. 3. 4. 5. As a result, I do not just enjoy the take-off of aircraft. Everything was much more interesting. Starting the run, he suddenly broke off and quickly stopped. Then turned around and came back.

6. After the next turn and a running start, he rose into the sky, leaving behind four black stripes exhaust.

7. Further actions were similar to the airshow. He was doing a circle around the airport, went to the strip and then passed over it at low altitude, then touched the very beginning the band again and soared into the air, then sat down in the center of the strip and took off again at the very end. Round and round I photographed him.

8. 9. 10. Stay enough, I decided to change the point of view and try to shoot with the new site, which was recently discovered. Once in the car, I went to the other end of the runway. During this time, P-3 took another two circles over the airfield. Upon arrival and after waiting, I finally took it off "with the nose."

12.P-3 "Orion" - is a coastal patrol antisubmarine aircraft company Lockheed, designed on the basis of passenger turboprop aircraft L-188 "Electra" in the late 50s. It is designed for the detection, targeting and destroying submarines potential enemy, as well as patrol coastal areas and conduct reconnaissance. On the plane, which I photographed were erased all identifying marks his affiliation to any squadron. But by tail number "161127" under the horizontal tail surface is easy to install, it's a plane P-3C, which belonged to the former patrol squadron VP-92, based on the naval base near the city of Brunswick USA in Maine.
Unlike other versions, this aircraft has completely revamped search and sighting system. He became the world's first anti-submarine aircraft with a centralized computer processing of the information from the search and navigation systems. One of the main distinguishing features of this aircraft, which catches the eye is the long tail. There is a detector of magnetic anomalies. In other words, an apparatus for searching disturbances in the geomagnetic field. This method is used to search for submarines, which distort the magnetic field around them.

14. Despite the fact that the plane was developed by Lockheed Martin, the most perfect modification of aircraft P-3 "Orion" is a variant developed from 1987 by Boeing. The possibility of its electronic equipment for the detection of low-noise submarines have increased several times.

After just three days, I met a representative of the turbojet of the same species. I was heading to the museum "Museum of Flight", located in Seattle. The aim was a gift shop at the museum. But I did not immediately fell into this store. Next to the museum is a military zone with very interesting aircraft. Such as the E-3 "Sentry" and other special-purpose aircraft. They are very difficult to photograph. Fence and airfield construction hinder a good shot. So this time passing by and seeing the tail of a military aircraft with identification marks India, I sighed, thinking: "That would be it as a sfotkat." I turned into the parking lot of the museum and could not believe my eyes. Right in the parking lot, fenced small fence was the same plane that I had just seen behind the fence. It was the P-8I "Neptune". I parked nearby. Fearing that it is impossible to photograph, I did it even when parked. The rain was falling. Coming out of the car, I walked over to the fence with a camera and exchanged a few words with the guy on duty near the aircraft. He said that if I want to see the plane closer I can go over the fence. I asked if I could take pictures of it. He replied yes. I could not believe what was happening. I then photographed with a special predilection almost every dish and the inscription on the plane. A number of antennas on it very much. This is especially noticeable in this picture, where the top of the fuselage like a dinosaur's back. Antenna located on top of this UHF antenna (UHF), VHF (VHF) and antenna radar identification system "friend or foe" (IFF).

Aircraft P-8I "Neptune" was created specifically for the Indian Navy. He is a modification of the aircraft P-8A "Poseidon", which was established by Boeing under contract with the US Navy from 2004 on the establishment and construction of multi-purpose maritime new generation aircraft program MMA (Multi-mission Maritime Aricraft). For its basis was a civilian aircraft Boeing 737-800. However, to perform more aggressive maneuvers on the airplane wing sets the gain on the modification of Boeing 737-900.

18. Of course, P-8 is very different from its civilian counterpart. Were carried out measures to strengthen the fuselage, wing and tail plane to perform more complex maneuvers and all-weather missions. A complex avionics included a variety of special systems

19. The aircraft system was installed in-flight refueling. Receiving hole located at the top of the fuselage just behind the cockpit. In the control system has also been amended. For example, the cab includes a switch that activates the ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) - anti-flight mode, in which the aircraft is able to maneuver with a roll of 45 °, in contrast to conventional taken at 737 - 28 °. Just for the convenience of the crew were abolished some systems. For example, the crew can turn off the warning about the flight at an altitude below 1,000 feet (305 meters) from the landing gear and flaps.

24. On the wing, vertical and horizontal tail using a new electro-mechanical de-icing system - Electro-Mechanical Expulsion De-icing Systems (EMEDS). The principle is based on the vibration of the leading edge of the stainless steel. By using vibration actuators mounted on the front edge of the wing and tail and occurs with sufficient force to remove the ice thickness of 1.5 mm.This technology is used on some business jets, as well as unmanned aircraft "Global Hawk".

25. Another feature of civil aircraft from the military is the presence of weapons hardpoints under the wing of the aircraft. Sock each pylon is also equipped with an electromechanical de-icing system - EMEDS. On 4 point suspension can be mounted anti-air-launched missiles AGM-84L "Harpoon Block II".

27. Due to the large power consumption by plane a more powerful source of energy. In this regard, on each engine generator set capacity of 180 kVA. For comparison, regular aircraft used 737-800 generators with capacity of 90 kVA. Because of the slightly larger size of the new generator on the motor housing on the one hand there is a ledge.

41,42. One of the main distinguishing components of the aircraft P- 8I from the P-8A is the presence of magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) - AN / ASQ-508A company CAE. It is located in a long white radome in the rear of the plane. As for P-3 "Orion", it is used to search for submarines under water by trapping the distortion of the magnetic field around them.

43. What a huge interest is the unit mounted under the rear of the aircraft. This system ESM (Electronic Support Measures) - a system for detecting, identifying and locating signals irradiating radar. Also here are installed sensors system MWS (Missile Warning System) - Early-warning radar. These two small windows, similar to the lens of the camera.

53, 54 The aircraft P-8I "Neptune" is to replace the anti-Soviet Tu-142ME, that once were purchased for the Indian Navy in the amount of 8 pieces. In 2009, India signed a contract with Boeing for the creation and building of eight anti-aircraft P-8. The first aircraft was delivered to the customer 19 December 2012. This is the seventh aircraft from this order. The works are on schedule, and this year the contract will be completed. So in the end - layout diagrams aircraft P-3C "Orion" and the P-8A "Poseidon". Find scheme aircraft P-3, it was not difficult. But the scheme P-8 aircraft had greater problems. Very difficult to find it in good quality with number and text readable. Both images can be deployed to the original size.

Its new here.... pics were taken before delivery to IN. :)

Yeah but I meant just the looks of the plane...I've seen planes that look aged even if their just off the production
line and prepping for delivery.

I particularly like the hues on this one - faint blue makes it look so exquisite.

.
My personal observation, in terms of technology P-8 is superior, but because of Jet engines, P-8 have a very small limit to increase or decrease the speed, in short spell of time, but P-3c Orion have that advantage, that if P3 Orion found any sign of submarine, it is capable enough to decrease the speed, and pin point the sign.

The two aren't even in the same boat. One is the replacement of the other. If P-8 doesn't slow down, it's probably
because it doesn't need to slow down - the sensors on P8 are generations ahead of P3.

Not quite true.
The aircraft; whether the P-8 or the P-3 do not have to slow down to pin-point location of the Sub. They both slow down, only to increase the on-station time by decreasing fuel consumption; this is called "loitering". Rather the P-8; because of its propulsion is able to reach the designated Patrol Area quicker than the P-3. So far as detection/pin-pointing the target/adversary is concerned; its the "Spook Gear" on board that does all the work, its hardly as if the Crew eye-ball the sub and shouts out "Sub Ahoy" while circling slowly! :D
Its a simply a no-brainer that the P-8 is a generation more advanced than the P-3. That should help you to put things into perspective.
