Paris was burning Saturday — with hatred of Israel.

Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters hurled rocks, burned an Israeli flag and set at least one car on fire in the northern part of the city in a raucous demonstration against violence in the Gaza Strip.

French police tried to disperse the protesters with teargas canisters and stun grenades.

The protest was in defiance of a ban on rallies that had been imposed after demonstrators clashed with police while marching on two Paris synagogues last weekend.

Rallies were also held in more than a dozen other French cities, from Lille in the north to Marseille in the south.

Thousands more demonstrated against Israel in London Saturday, joining the Parisians in calling for an end to Israeli military action.

In Paris, a police spokesman said 38 demonstrators had been arrested by early evening and clashes were dying down.

French President François Hollande said he understood citizens’ emotional responses to the conflict, but would not allow violence to spill over into France.

The country has the largest population of both Muslims and Jews of any European nation.

Saturday marked the Israeli military’s second day of its ground operation in Gaza, pounding Palestinian sites with airstrikes and demolishing more than a dozen tunnels it said could be used by militants to carry out attacks.

Palestinian commandos disguised as Israeli troops still managed to infiltrate a tunnel, killing two Israeli soldiers and injuring several others. Hamas said 12 of its own fighters joined the fight and that at least one of them was killed.

Militants jumped out of tunnels and fired at soldiers in two other clashes. Two of the gunmen were killed. The Israeli army said tranquilizer guns and cuffs were found in one clash, indicating the gunmen “intended to abduct Israelis.”

Meanwhile, an Israeli Bedouin was killed when a Hamas rocket hit his encampment in southern Israel.

Four of his family members, including two children, were wounded.

Israel’s chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, warned of more “moments of hardship,” suggesting Israeli deaths could mount.

As diplomats struggle to broker a cease-fire, international advocates are condemning the number of children killed in the conflict.

Two 6-year-olds and a toddler died in airstrikes and shellings Saturday, Palestinians reported.

Some of the protesters threw stones and other objects at riot police, who responded with rounds of tear gas.

Several climbed onto a building under construction, burning an Israeli flag. Others waved a Palestinian flag from atop a street sign.

French authorities banned a pro-Palestinian march after a protest last Sunday turned violent, with two synagogues attacked. Hundreds of riot police were out Sunday to enforce the ban.

The protesters still managed to hang banners reading “Palestine Will Live” and “Israel Assassins” in front of Montmartre’s famed basilica.

Fighting in the Mideast has enflamed tensions in France, home to Western Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish populations.

PARIS (AP) — Police clashed on Saturday with thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters who defied a ban on a Paris demonstration over the Israeli offensive in Gaza. More than 30 people were arrested and it wasn't immediately clear if there were injuries.

Some protesters threw stones and other objects at riot police, who responded with tear gas in an hours-long confrontation in a working class neighborhood, which had been designated as the starting point of the banned march.

Hundreds of riot police stopped the protesters from marching, but several demonstrators climbed onto a building under construction and burned an Israeli flag. Others waved a Palestinian flag from atop a street sign.

The protest degenerated into running battles with police, and at least 33 protesters were arrested, a figure likely to increase, police said.

French authorities had banned the planned pro-Palestinian march after a protest on July 13 turned violent, with two synagogues attacked.

A group of protesters dispersed by the tear gas still managed to hang banners reading "Palestine Will Live" and "Israel Assassins" in front of Montmartre's famed basilica.

Fighting in the Middle East has enflamed tensions in France, home to Western Europe's largest Muslim and Jewish populations. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was in the Mideast on Saturday in a bid to help open the way to a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic militant group which runs the Gaza Strip.

Despite a ban announced Friday, thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in Paris Saturday, leading to confrontations with the police and dozens of arrests.
  • On Friday, Paris city officials imposed a ban on the pro-Palestine demonstration set for Saturday after a similar protest had descended into violence earlier in the week.
  • Despite the ban, about 3,000 people came to show both their anger at the Israeli campaign in Gazaand their indignation at the Paris ban. Riot police were on site in the hours before the scheduled start to the protest.
  • The march began peacefully and quickly grew more violent. The fiercest confrontations appeared to be around the Barbès area in northern Paris, where cars were set alight and some demonstrators hurled rocks and other objects at the security forces.
  • However, by early evening, traffic was beginning to circulate again on the roads near Barbès and most protesters had dispersed, leaving behind smouldering wreckage.
  • Police said that the 38 protesters were arrested for violence against the police or for "throwing projectiles" such as rocks.
  • Police also reported that 14 officers were injured in the clashes.

Ask the french i only see Right wing win elections next time, looks like the whole world is realizing what dangers come with such immigration.
What discriminatory policies>?

Fingering turkey on Armenia .. While forgetting Algerian genocode .. Veil ban... Banning pro Palestine protests ... The way they treat immigrants .. Including Roma's etc.. If they want to stay neutral than they should show neutrality .. If they talk abt freedom of speech than why ban peaceful protests? Why try to marginalise a community?

P.S: I Dnt justify the above news.

They are doing exactly what as a nation should do,
would you appreciate some immigrant coming to your country, enjoy your welfare and then later vandalise, arson, burn your or state property?I guess nt.
Why do these immigrants think that they will get away with such behavior, it only makes the ring wing strong and when its strong enough they will reclaim their nation from whom they perceive as outsiders.
Such protests only help consolidate sympathy of neutral/General public towards Right Wing groups.
What these people who protest don't know is they only help in strengthening Right Wing Voter base.
