ANP worker’s murder fuels Karachi fire
* Three people shot dead, nine vehicles set ablaze
KARACHI: It was another unruly day for the people of Karachi as the killing of an Awami National Party (ANP) worker on Wednesday added fuel to the unrest that began a day earlier after the murder of an MQM activist.
Three people were shot dead, at least seven vehicles set on fire while gun battles were continuing in several city areas after unidentified gunmen shot dead Zainullah Khan, in-charge of ANP’s Patel Para ward.
Police said Zainullah and his aide Sajid Hassan Zai were driving to Patel Para after a meeting in New Karachi when the gunmen intercepted their car near the Board Office and opened fire.
An injured Zainullah succumbed to injuries on his way to hospital while Sajid sustained bullet wounds.
Superintendent of Police Tanveer Alam Odho quoted Sajid as saying that Zainullah, who was driving the car, received four bullets.
Soon after Zainullah’s killing, violence spilled over in various areas of Karachi, including Patel Para, Teen Hatti, Guru Mender Chowrangi, Banaras, Lasbela, Essa Nagri, Pehalwan Goth, Rabia City and Sohrab Goth.
Police said gunmen shot dead a 25-year-old shopkeeper, Abdul Samad, in Mina Bazaar, PIB Colony. A man namely,(Urdu speaker sindhi) Muhammad Tahir, was also shot dead near Old Golimar.
Gunmen in Lasbela Chowk also shot a passer-by, who died on his way to hospital.
The situation was also tense in areas around Abul Hassan Ispahani Road and Essa Nagri where rival ethnic groups clashed with each other, bringing life to a standstill and forcing residents to stay indoors.
Traders in Empress Market, Electronic Market and surrounding areas also shut their businesses following shooting by miscreants.
Two motorbikes, as many cars and a public bus were set ablaze in Patel Para and Lasbela areas. Miscreants also tried to torch two minibuses on Nishtar Road but a rescue team foiled their attempt.
A car and a motorbike were also set on fire in Essa Nagri where shooting incidents resulted in a traffic chaos. A bus was set on fire in Gulistan-e-Jauhar near Rabia City Apartments.
Police blocked several major roads, including Patel Para, Lasbela, Hassan Square and Abul Hassan Ispahani Road, to maintain order.
