ANP, JUI-F agree on seat-adjustment to jointly contest by-elections

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and Awami National Party which until now have been political and ideological rivals agreed on seat adjustment here Friday for jointly contesting the August 22 by-elections.

The announcement was made in a joint press conference of leaders of both the parties at the JUI-F provincial headquarters. The negotiations between the two parties that were going on for some days proved successful in the end when they agreed to seat adjustment on the national and provincial assembly seats.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the by-elections would be held on five national and four provincial assembly seats. The JUI-F, an Islamic party, would support the nationalist and secular ANP on NA-1 Peshawar, NA-5 Nowshera and PK-23 Mardan. The ANP would support the candidates of JUI-F on NA-13 Swabi, NA-25 D I Khan-cum-Tank, NA-27 Lakki Marwat and PK-70 Bannu.

The decision on the remaining two seats of provincial assembly, PK-27 Mardan and PK-42 Hangu could not be made. However, both the parties agreed to continue consultation on these seats. ANP had earlier decided not to field its candidate on PK-27 Mardan, which fell vacant due to death of independent MPA Imran Mohmand in a suicide attack on a funeral in Shergarh area of Mardan district.

The party decided not to contest by-election on the seat as a mark of respect for the slain MPA whose brother Jamshed Mohmand is contesting for the seat as an independent candidate.

On PK-42 Hangu, the ANP has awarded ticket to Syed Husain Ali Shah Hussaini. The seat fell vacant due to the killing of MPA Farid Khan, who was elected as an independent and had later joined the PTI. Shah Faisal, the brother of late Fareed Khan, would contest the election from the said constituency as an independent candidate.

ANP leader and candidate for NA-1 Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Arbab Tahir, Tajuddin Khan and Malik Ghulam Mustafa, and JUI-F leaders Maulana Sheikh Amanullah, Attaullah Darwish and Abdul Jalil Jan were present at the press conference where the agreement on seat adjustment was announced.

ANP spokesman Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that both the parties had agreed to support each other on the said constituencies after having reached seat-to-seat adjustment formula for the forthcoming by-elections. He urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to make adequate arrangements for holding free, fair and transparent by-polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Meanwhile, the returning officers accepted nomination papers of 140 candidates for the by-election on five National Assembly and four Provincial Assembly seats in the province. The last date for filing appeals against the decision of returning officers concerning acceptance/rejection of nomination papers is July 22, while a candidate can withdraw candidature till July 30.
