A week after the murder of noted Kannada progressive thinker and scholar M M Kalburgi, another rationalist free-thinker and writer K S Bhagwan today received a letter threatening his life.

"I was not at home when the letter came this afternoon. My family received it. After reading the letter, written in English, the family informed the police... Currently, it is with the police," he told PTI.

Bhagwan had incurred the wrath of right-wing activists after he allegedly disparaged the Bhagawad Gita while speaking at a programme in Mysuru in February this year.

A Bajrang Dal local activist was arrested in Dakshina Kannada district a day after Kalburgi's death on August 30 for allegedly posting remarks on Twitter threatening Bhagwan for his 'derogatory' remarks on the Bhagawad Gita.

Bhagwan's family spoke to him about the contents of the letter which said that "three people we have finished, next is your turn; no amount of police protection will help. Your time is over, count the days."

Stating that he is "not deterred" by such threats, Bhagwan said "it shows utter ignorance on the part of those who wrote the letter. They wouldn't have even read a page of my writing. I write on the basis of my research. If they have objections about it, they can always oppose it in a civilised way."

"This is not the first time I have received such threats; I'm not afraid," he added.

Police here are now examining the letter and its origin.

"Yes, a letter threatening Bhagwan was received at his residence, we are investigating it," IGP (Southern Range) B K Singh said.

The murder of Kalburgi had prompted the state police to increase the security provided to Bhagwan. They had also extended security to other noted litterateurs, including Jnanpeeth award winner Girish Karnad and S L Byrappa.

77-year-old vocal and outspoken rationalist Kalburgi fell to the bullets of two unidentified men at his residence at Dharwad in north Karnataka on August 30.

Karnataka government has decided to hand over the Kalburgi murder case to CBI. The state CID would probe it till the central agency takes over.

The way I see it, this is a joint operation between ISI agents and Khangress-sickular-Leftists to overthrow the BJP government. What say you?

ISI is a very responsible organization, and does not interfere in any country's internal affairs.

This is just a threat. IF he dies, we'll discuss it then. Until then lets not worry too much. Indian Police is investigating the matter :D

It is none of the above but their own society, in pursuit of prosperity and to attain super power status, they are continuously ignoring many social evils that were always there, they have always tried to hide the extremist side of their society by labeling it a handful of people, a minority or some nut jobs, or taking a religious stance on it and avoiding it by saying it was done by follower of another religion etc. etc. Unless they themselves realise that they need to confront it and stop indirectly encouraging it by openly acknowledging it, they should be mentally ready that this is going to increase and intolerance is going to overcome them one day.

.
I would say you should worry more about people like qadri and blasphemy killings in your own country and less about who gets crank calls in India. :enjoy:

truth.

they have always tried to hide the extremist side of their society by labeling it a handful of people, a minority or some nut jobs

the phrase the sanghi supporters use is "fringe groups" for those like "sri rama sena" and "bajrang dal"... but these are not fringe at all... they operate openly and most sad is that the urban youth take to the internet in more or less support of these groups.

Unless they themselves realise that they need to confront it and stop indirectly encouraging it by openly acknowledging it

bollywood is not doing enough to bring this realization, though there have been politically incorrect films like haider and parzania that have taken the extremist monster head on.

Is it up to bollywood to correct evils of the society? Sadly bollywood is contributing to it, even if they start making films what change those films will bring? It is not like bollywood is a school or community center that educates and grooms people? It is a money making industry nothing more.

If Bollywood can incite its viewers to go to rape spree, it can also teach its viewers to act with civility. Film, at-least in Bharat, is a powerful teaching medium.

Syed Sb. bollywood has boiled down to a flesh marketing medium. It sells what people want to see and fantasize, and it is not only Indians who watch bollywood it is us too. Our tv has not shown any hesitation in crossing all the limits be it dramas or ads. So intention of rape may be influenced by what one watches but that cannot be the sole driver behind a rape. Expecting a money making business to depart knowledge of civility would be naïve.

Whether Bollywood would change its ways or not it is a separate debate but it has influence on its viewers both positive and negative. Pakistanis do watch Bollywood regurgitate (though I have not watched that crap for 20+ years) but do not get influenced as heavily because of our religious and moral values that albeit dwindling, still fence against social ills to some extent.

Syed Sb. I think you have been out of country for long, let this thread be their's, if I start highlighting our society I am sure it will take no time to get me being labelled as a traitor. Just a hint sometimes I really wonder if we as a society have evolved as responsible humans forget about being good Muslims. We have enough share of educated idiots with no civic sense and moral values.

I am not denying that our religious, social, and moral values are on decline and fast, but no matter how much they decline, there is always some hope due to our belief in Allah and his Prophet (PBUH) and that is what makes us different.

Hazrat Faiz bin Ayaz (RA) , a great Sufi from Caliph Haroon Rasheedd's time, was a robber. Once he jumped into a house and heard someone reciting the ayah, translation: "Has time not come that they get changed?", and he abandoned robbery and became one of the great Sufi and pious Muslim. Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak (RA) was a womanizer; after spending entire night with a woman he heard azan for morning prayers and his heart turned. Re rose to the rank of great Muslim Sufi. Allama Iqbal did not say for no reason:

A robber and a womanizer in a society that is mainly compromised of better Muslims will have all the chances that their hearts will change someday, but what about the chances in a society that recites Quran in Ramazan only? A society of zardars and shareefs? A society whose ex interior minister could not even recite Surah Ikhlas correctly. A society where bearded people looking like Muslims don't care about their day to day dealings and how they earn and what they sell, a society where a clean shaven is criticizing Islam and its teachings because he thinks deeds of some nut jobs is what Islam is all about? A society where a car lifter is habitual of saying five times prayers?

All previous people who faced wrath of ALLAH had one evil prevalent in their societies, be it shirk, aad, samood, loot, bani Israel and many others. All of them were punished because they had mainly one evil, but you are putting your hopes in a society that has evils ranging from child sexual abuse to selling Haram meat. Sorry Syed Sb Hidayat ki talab ho to Hidayat milti hai, jo apny amal pay pasheman he na hua kabi wo kya khak hidayat yafta ho pay ga.

Is it up to bollywood to correct evils of the society?

Film, at-least in Bharat, is a powerful teaching medium.

films anywhere are a powerful teaching medium... two aamir khan films, "taare zameen par" and "3 idiots" made many people in india realize the faults in the current education system... "interstellar" surely put many people worldwide into reflective mode... on the opposite side, nato propaganda films like "rambo" and "the dictator" brought out the worst in audiences and there were many "family films" in india in the 70's that propagated idealized nonsense about actually crap south asian "family values".

Sadly bollywood is contributing to it, even if they start making films what change those films will bring? It is not like bollywood is a school or community center that educates and grooms people? It is a money making industry nothing more.

it is significant that 68 years of love stories in indian cinema has not eradicated "honor killing" in india... same should be said of pakistan... why do you think that is??

If Bollywood can incite its viewers to go to rape spree

can you elaborate??

but what about the chances in a society that recites Quran in Ramazan only?

what about former and current socialist/socialistic muslim/muslim-majority societies where blind recitation of quran ( quran-qaani ) is not the first priority?? surely, they are far better societies ( and far more islamic societies ) than those like india, pakistan, indonesia, iran and saudia.
