The ANCIENT INDIA & IRAN TRUST. Cambridge, England.

Founded in 1978, the Ancient India & Iran Trust occupies a unique postition in the UK. We are the only independent charity concerned with the study of early India, Iran & Central Asia, promoting both scholarly research & popular interest in the area. We have a library of over 25,000 volumes and organise a range of activities including conferences, public lectures and visiting fellowships. Our primary interest has been in prehistory, archaeology, art history and ancient languages, but this often extends to more modern topics and other disciplines.

The idea of the Ancient India & Iran Trust came to the Founding Trustees when they became aware that the Indian sub-continent, together with Iran, Afghanistan & parts of Central Asia, was the 'neglected quarter' of the world in terms of British cultural life. Britain had had a close association with India in particular for over three centuries and had unrivalled resources for the study of its culture, art and history, in the India Office Library, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and much more. And yet, in the wake of South Asian independence, there were very few institutions, teaching posts or funds devoted to the promotion of popular or scholarly interest in any of these regions. The Trust was therefore set up to provide a focal point where scholars and members of the public with interests in the cultures of the ancient Indian and Iranian worlds could meet and discuss matters of common interest and use its unique library.

Today, the Trust runs a regular series of public lectures, visiting fellowship programmes and a bursary scheme for people wishing to come and use its library and other resources in Cambridge. It also organises and hosts conferences, high profile lectures and occasional exhibitions, and has produced some publications. In addition, it created and funded the British Archaeological Mission to Pakistan in the 1980s and has provided a base for external research projects such as the AHRC funded Manichean Dictionary Project (1999-2005) and Bactrian Chronology Project (2004-7). In 2005 the Trust was voted runner up in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category of the Charity Awards.

We are based in a large Victorian house at 23 Brooklands Avenue, near the Railway Station, Botanical Gardens and central Cambridge. The house was purchased by the five Founding Trustees in 1981 and became the repositories of their specialised libraries. It was also the home until his death at the age of 96 of our first Chair, the distinguished scholar and linguist, Sir Harold Bailey. We are open Monday-Friday. Anyone interested in using our library or attending our lectures and other events is welcome; please click here for details of how to contact us.

That is awesome bro, Iran and India have so much in common.

look at this jiroft civilization you will see what I mean.
we are truly ancient brother.

My own caste Lohana comes from Iran brother. Wow im watching the video you posted I was not aware of that lost city Jiroft until now that is remarkable and it totally makes sense.

Is the Iranian government committed to preserve the ancient civilisation of Iran? it is sad if those items are stolen as it should be put in a Museum on display for future generations.

British Museum - Room 52: Ancient Iran

Iran was a major centre of ancient culture. It was rich in valuable natural resources, especially metals, and played an important role in the development of ancient Middle Eastern civilisation and trade. Room 52 highlights these ancient interconnections and the rise of distinctive local cultures, such as in Luristan, during the age of migrations after about 1400 BC.

More information

During the sixth century BC, Cyrus the Great founded a mighty Persian empire which eventually stretched from Egypt to Pakistan. Objects on display from this period include the Cyrus Cylinder and the Oxus Treasure. Monumental plaster casts of sculptures from Persepolis are also displayed in Room 52 and on the East stairs.

The later periods of the Parthian and Sasanian empires mark a revival in Iranian culture and are represented through displays including silver plates and cut glass.

It is likely that there was a very ancient Elamite civilization in the area, which was linked to Mesopotamia, the Indus valley and places in the Arab peninsula like Qatar. There were also trading links with southern India.

I think this culture may have been the root of the Old Persian language.

However, there is another distinct influence which came into Persia around 2000 BC - and that is the Avestan language and the Zoroastrian religion.

Avestan is quite different from Old Persian, but is very similar to Vedic Sanskrit.

The classical Persian civilization seems to be a result of the mixing of these two influences.

hhehe Prince of Persia came from Iran and invaded the world of mind

I have always been intrested in archaeology and ancient history as we can learn so much from the past, it is quite ironic that both our countries have items in the British Museum along with Egypt.

They have no respect for us, they don't relise they are nothing anymore.
remember when top gear came to India? even my mom was like these jerks are so disrespectful.and she usually says nothing.

best thing we can do and we should, we should create an culture unity between the cradle of civilizations like Iran,Indian.

then we will see them burn.

btw we call jiroft "little India" in Iran.
