KARACHI: Renowned boxer Amir Khan on Thursday launched Pakistan’s first professional boxing league in a star-studded event in Karachi’s Marriott Hotel.

The event led under the vision of two-time world champion Amir Khan and promoted by the British business tycoon Bill Dosanjh is aptly named “Super Boxing League”.

CEO ARY Digital Network Salman Iqbal and Amir Khan will jointly serve as boxing league’s chairman of the tournament which will see eight teams owned by cricketing and showbiz celebrities locking horns for the title.

The teams are named after major cities of the country including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot and Quetta. Each team will comprise of 10 males and two females in squad to hold the fort for their respective franchises.

Out of the eight teams, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi owns Pakhtoon Warriors, legendary pacer Wasim Akram bought Multan Nawabs, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan owns Faisalabad Falcons, while CEO ARY Digital Network Salman Iqbal and actor Fahad Mustafa jointly own Karachi Cobras.

Pakistan has a huge talent pool for boxing. A lot of aspiring athletes wish to turn professional and they all just need the right platform. The SBL gives fighters that opportunity and we will ensure these professional athletes get the recognition they deserve,” Founder and CEO Bill Dosanjh had said while announcing the league.

Amir Khan was of the view that he aims to provide the right training to potential boxers which will help in producing more professional world champions.

“I believe Pakistan can produce many Muhammad Alis,” Amir Khan had said in a statement issued with announcement of the league.

About the tournament
Super Boxing League (SBL) Pakistan will be organized in association with Punjab Sports Board (PSB) & World Boxing Council (WBC) from September 28, 2018 to November 03, 2018 at the Amir Khan Boxing Academy Islamabad.

For a transparent and successful inaugural edition SBL Pakistan, WBC will be supervising the entire tournament, the best of Pakistani and international talent and present world class, captivating fights.

The event will spread over six weeks of adrenaline and pure thrill with league fights.

Each of the six matches will feature five male fights and one female fight ensuring diversity and magnetism of the event is comprehensive.

The league, in its first season, will have a mix of experience and youth with bringing in talent across the Featherweight – 57 kg, Welterweight – 66.7kg, Middleweight – 72.57 kg, Super Middleweight- 76.2 kg, Heavy weight – unlimited and Female super fly – 52.16 kg categories.

For Pakistan, the Live telecast rights will go to the highest bidding broadcaster. While globally, SBL has signed agreements with Fox Network for Asian markets, Tencent – QQ Penguin for China and with Sky Sports for New Zealand providing broadcasting outreach over 900 million homes in more than 50 countries.

KARACHI: British boxer Amir Khan launched the Super Boxing League (SBL) here on Thursday at a local hotel.

Two-time world champion Amir Khan is promoting the event backed by British business tycoon Bill Dosanjh.

Khan and CEO ARY Digital Network Salman Iqbal, who also owns Pakistan Super League franchise Karachi Kings, will jointly serve as the league’s chairman which is set to feature eight teams owned by cricketing and showbiz celebrities.

The teams are named after major cities of the country including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot and Quetta. Each team will comprise of 10 men and two women boxers.

However, the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF), in a statement released on June 19, has said it does not recognise the SBL due to it not being in line with the Constitution of the national federation and the statutes of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

“The league is being organised under the banner of WBC shall have adverse effects upon national boxing which could have been mitigated, if the league was organised through PBF as laid down in AIBA statutes,” the PBF statement said.

“The PBF shall be readily available to assist Mr. Amir Khan in his all plans aimed for the promotion and development of boxing in Pakistan once [his league] in line with the statutes and rules of AIBA and Constitution of PBF.”

KARACHI: Pakistani boxer Nadir Baloch believes that two-time former world champion Brit Amir Khan’s Super Boxing League is a mixed bag for the local pugilists as they do not know what to expect.

Baloch, former national champion, fights in the featherweight category believes Super Boxing League launch should benefit local boxers.

“It is a 50-50 thing,” said Baloch, who knocked out Tanzania’s Juma Fundi last year to take the Universal Boxing Organization’s Super Bantamweight title and won another fight on June 10 in Karachi. “They want to earn money through it, but we need to see the Pakistani boxers thrive as well. We haven’t got much activity as it is. But this is a business, the league, and we know it.”

While Amir arrived with his wife and partner Bill Dosanjh at a local hotel in Karachi nearly three hours late from the scheduled time for the press conference where they launched their league, the local boxers were not invited at the event.

The League will have eight teams and each team would have one female player along with foreign boxers joining in as well, the announcement was made at the launch.

Meanwhile, owners of franchises include big names like former Pakistan T20I captain Shahid Afridi, owner of the Pakhtoon Warriors, along with Zeshan Afzal. Pace legend Wasim Akram owns Multan Nawabs. Television actor Fahad Mustafa along with Salman Iqbal own Karachi Cobras. Singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan owns Faisalabad Falcons. Ali Sheikh owns Lahore Cobras, whereas Quetta Gladiators have Nadeem Omar and Saif Malik as the owners.

On the other hand Islamabad Kings do not have any takers so far.

The league is supposed to start in September, while the Pakistan Boxing Federation has not approved of the league.

Amir began the first Super Boxing League in India last year, with eight teams and celebrity franchise owners and they seem to be repeating the format in Pakistan as well. The Indian national boxing federation had also disapproved of the league.

But Amir adds that the league is a professional platform for the Pakistani boxers and new talent to make their career in the sport.

But the local boxers are still in the dark.

At the launch event they announced that the trials will take place for the teams as well.

“They did contact me a few months ago telling me about the league but I don’t know the rest,” said Baloch. “As far as the trials are concerned, I’m not afraid of the competition, but I am the top boxer in my category at the national level. I’m hoping that since celebrities are involved, maybe that may guarantee future sponsorships for boxers. Only time can tell.”

Well the best way for Boxing culture to promote is by fighting in Live Arena
There is a Buzz watching a Live Fight , Fist to fist combat and once you develop a love for sport the fans will just get attracted to the sport

For Boxing the Buzz is not felt as much as on TV vs in Live Fight

Considering Pakistan has a Warrior culture , the fights would be enjoyed held in small 4,000-5,000 crowd arenas to develop a fan support for fighters. Develop Local Fighters in each city and gradually expose the talent at National Level

Instead of meaningless political Talk Shows , if people instead bought a ticket to go enjoy a Man vs Man Fight , it is healthy habbit

There is a time for political debate and there is a time when a Man must put the gloves on and smash his opponent

A decade ago Gei News use to host ammature boxing competitions from Karachi. Cuban coaches were invited to train young talented boxers from Layari. It was fascinating to watch the series. Appreciation towards Amir Khan who has not forgotten his ancestral roots and is doing something for the nation. I know youth from Layari and the Hazara from Quetta are very talented boxers, it will be a great opportunity for some to show thier skill. We need a football league as well.
