Surprise surprise, Pakistan is once again the center of attention in the USA. This time, it seems that Americans have officially lost their shit. Yes, it looks like Donald Trump being the president of the US is affecting the people and their thought process as well. Americans are now thinking that Tulsi is a drug that is used to get high!

According to a report published with Fox8, Ohio police have started the crackdown on Tulsi all over the county. As per Americans, students are getting high off Tulsi and other products that include ‘betel nut’, which to us Pakistanis, literally means ‘Chaaliya’! We don’t know about you but this episode has got is in absolute fits!

Fox says, ” Betel nut is an oral stimulant used by millions in different regions of Asia. Areca nuts are wrapped in betel leaf and then chewed. Some betel products also contain tobacco. Health officials say the product isn’t a controlled substance but note that researchers link it to oral cancer and tooth decay. Officials say Columbus area international markets sell the illegal import. Franklin County Public Health food inspectors continue to search markets to remove betel nut. Officials say the Food and Drug Administration is now involved.”

The report states that this is “serious stuff” not realizing that Pakistanis have been eating Chaaliya day and night for decades. They even referred to Tulsi as “Terrsi!” yes, this qaum is literally ‘tarsi hui’ for attention. Imagine Americans giving this much importance to Chaaliya and not marijuana or crystal meth, the two most common drugs in the USA, along with ecstasy, LSD and cocaine.

The police officer seen in the video seems very shocked after a shopkeeper gave him a box of Tulsi without asking for his ID or anything else. Somebody needs to tell Americans that Pakistanis literally eat Tulsi for breakfast.

It's because it contains a carcinogen: Betel Nut. It isn't a controlled substance in the US yet.

From the World Health Organization

http://www.wpro.who.int/tobacco/documents/201203_Betelnut/en/

Executive summary
There is evidence to show that the frequency of betel nut use is increasing in the Western Pacific Region and that its use is more frequently associated with the chewing of tobacco. Betel nut chewing induces oral precancerous lesions that have a high propensity to progress. Betel nut itself has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC). While it is clear that the use of betel nut alone is a threat to health, its combination with tobacco greatly increases an individual’s risk of premature illness and death. In countries in the Western Pacific Region where this is observed, betel nut and tobacco chewing has become a significant public health problem.

With the entry into force of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), there has been increasing concern about the promotion of smokeless tobacco use. The groundwork for this report began in 2006 when the Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI), the Western Pacifi c Regional Office, commissioned the Secretariat of the Pacifi c Community (SPC) to review the use of betel (areca) nut and tobacco in the Western Pacifi c Region. This was followed in August 2010 by a meeting of national focal points in tobacco control from the countries that report high use of betel nut and tobacco. Proposed actions have been mapped and linked to the Regional Action Plan for the TFI in the Western Pacifi c Region (2010-2014). This document is envisioned as a supplement for countries that wish to highlight specifi c tobacco control indicators and actions related to reduction of smokeless tobacco use.

A major effort needs to be made to provide decision-makers with evidence of the serious harm caused by betel nut chewing, with and without tobacco. Community-based strategies are also needed to overcome cultural beliefs and practices that are barriers to sound public health measures that can save lives and prevent unnecessary suffering from oral cancer and other diseases.

Health experts warning police about substance teens are using to get high

Public health officials warned central Ohio law enforcement to be on the lookout for an international substance known as betel nut. The World Health Organization labeled it a carcinogen, but police said teens are chewing betel nut to get high.

Reynoldsburg police said they believe the substance was illegally imported to Columbus from Nepal or India. Police said a school resource officer has caught several high school students at the Summit campus who immigrated from Nepal with betel nut after they were seen acting dazed and disoriented.

"We believe there's a euphoric effect but it also seems to affect their equilibrium. There's a general loss of balance and coordination that goes along with the use of this product," said Reynoldsburg Police Chief Jim O'Neill.

Police said earlier this week a plain-clothes officer walked into an international market in the 7600 block of East Main Street and purchased an entire box of a product containing betel nut for just a few dollars.

"We walked right into the store, asked for it, they gave us a once over look and then provided us with a box full of these products," said Chief O'Neill.

10TV obtained a health report which revealed food inspectors from Franklin County Public Health targeted the store and found nearly a half dozen products containing betel nut, including "whole frozen betel nuts." Health workers said the store voluntarily opened all of the packages and discarded all of the product. 10TV visited the market Thursday and found no evidence of betel nut on store shelves.

Health experts said betel nut isn't a controlled substance but said studies have linked the substance to cancer of the mouth and esophagus, and to tooth decay.

Franklin County Public Health said inspectors are continuing to search markets for betel nut before it falls into the hands of more teens, and said the FDA and the Ohio Department of Agriculture are now involved in the investigation.

The typical 'everybody else does it' argument, humans have been consuming alcohol since we found honey and put it in a pot. Tulsi is poor South Asian chewing tobacco. If it contains betel nut then its a drug and should be controlled.
